Stage Rest day - Tuesday, July 24: Pau

Tour 2007: The final rounds begin

With just 2'23" separating maillot jaune Michael Rasmussen (Rabobank) and closest challenger Alberto Contador (Discovery Channel), the stakes are extremely high heading into the final five days of this year's Tour de France. Cyclingnews' Shane Stokes gives a summary of the Tour's action since the first rest day and previews what is yet to come.

Contador appeared stronger than Rasmussen on the climb of the Col du Peyresourde on Monday, putting him under pressure with several high-powered attacks, and if his form continues to rise, he could cause damage on Wednesday's final mountain stage. Both will be aware that this day may well determine the final winner of the race. Contador is seen as the stronger time trialist and while 2'23" is a strong buffer, any reduction of that gap could swing the balance in Saturday's flat 55.5 kilometre race against the clock. He'll do everything he can to gain time; Rasmussen, on the other hand, knows that he just has to stay with his rival and that should be enough.

Before then, the two have a chance to recharge their batteries somewhat during Tuesday's rest day in Pau, taking recovery rides, eating and sleeping well, and preparing mentally for what lies ahead.

The other GC riders will also use the day to gather their forces. Cadel Evans (Predictor-Lotto) is currently third overall but his deficit of four minutes means that unless he manages to somehow gain time on Rasmussen and Contador on Wednesday, his yellow jersey hopes are gone. He should be stronger than both in the final time trial but it's hard to see him overcoming that sort of gap.

That said, if his body responds very well to the rest day and he holds the Spanish climber on Wednesday – far easier said than done – then second place overall is possible. He's currently 1'37" behind the Disco rider and should make that up in the last time trial.

Given what's happened on the first two Pyrenean stages, it's more likely that he will be scrapping for third step on the podium, though. Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel) is currently fourth overall, 5'25" behind Rasmussen and 1'25" behind Evans. Andreas Klöden (Astana) is nine seconds further back, while Carlos Sastre (CSC) is sixth overall, 6'46" behind Rasmussen and 2'46" adrift of Evans.

Haimar Zubeldia (Euskaltel Euskadi) was one of Monday's big movers, going clear in the Vinokourov break and jumping from 13th to seventh overall. Kim Kirchen (T-Mobile) also benefited, finishing second on the stage and moving up five places to ninth. He is now sandwiched between Andrey Kashechkin (Astana) and Mikel Astarloza (Euskaltel Euskadi) in the general classification. The top ten will undoubtedly get another big shakeup on Wednesday, but what about the top three?

Following in the wheeltracks of great Colombian climbers such as Luis Herrera, Fabio Parra, Santiago Botero, Oliverio Rincon and Félix Cardenas, 24 year-old Barloworld rider Juan Mauricio Soler raced to a superb mountain victory on stage nine of the Tour de France.

The first-time Tour rider soloed into Briançon ahead of the top guns of the race, finishing 38 seconds up on Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne) and Cadel Evans (Predictor - Lotto) and another handful of seconds ahead of many of the other general classification riders.

In doing so he repeated the 2000 victory of Botero there, and also took the first major Colombian success at the Tour since Victor Hugo Peña won the team time trial with Discovery Channel back in 2003 and wore the yellow jersey.

Soler was involved with the action from the start of the stage, going clear in an early break on the Col du Iseran and then dropping the other riders on the hors catégorie Col du Galibier. Yaroslav Popovych (Discovery Channel) hung on for a while but he too was dropped before the summit. The Ukrainian joined up with team-mate Alberto Contador and together tried to reel in Soler, but the Colombian was riding far too strongly. He ended the day with the stage victory and also moved up to second overall in the mountains classification.

The day's drama was increased when Alexandre Vinokourov finished 3'24 back, coming home in a group with Astana team-mate Andrey Kashechkin, Oscar Pereiro (Caisse d'Epargne) and Frank Schleck (CSC). All suffered a serious blow to their GC chances and an injured Vino – regarded by many as the big pre-race favourite – broke down in tears. He ended the day 8'05" behind ongoing race leader Michael Rasmussen.

Vasseur wins at the Tour

Ten years after he won a stage and took the yellow jersey, Cédric Vasseur took the first French win of the 2007 Tour de France when he outsprinted countryman Sandy Casar (Française des Jeux), Michael Albasini (Liquigas), Patrice Halgand (Crédit Agricole) and Jens Voigt (Team CSC) to the line in Marseille. In doing so, the 36 year-old brought his Tour career to a fine end.

The quintet were part of a large break which was clear just before 80 kilometres of racing had elapsed. The group was whittled down to five riders on the lumpy run in towards the line and despite attacks by Voigt and Halgand on the final climb of La Gineste, stayed together until the end.

The main bunch came in 10'36" back and in placing second to Sébastien Chavanel (Française des Jeux) in the mass gallop to the line, Tom Boonen (Quick.Step – Innergetic) increased his maillot vert lead over Erik Zabel (Team Milram) and Robert Hunter (Barloworld). The race lead of Michael Rasmussen (Rabobank) was not threatened by the break and he remained 2'35" clear of Valverde.

Rob Hunter celebrates

Making up for his near miss on stage four, Robert Hunter thundered home first into Montpellier to become the first South African rider to win a stage of the Tour de France.

The 30 year-old rider timed his move just right to beat Fabian Cancellara (Team CSC) and Murilo Fischer (Liquigas). Green jersey Tom Boonen (Quick.Step – Innergetic) and several others were hampered by a crash inside the final kilometre.

The day was expected to be a regular transitional stage but was instead marked by a dramatic acceleration in pace orchestrated by the Astana team of Alexandre Vinokourov. Still smarting after losing time on the stage to Briançon, the Kazakh ordered his team to ramp up the pace with approximately 72 kilometres to go. This caused echelons to form and while most of the general classification contenders made the split, great French hope Christophe Moreau was caught napping. Despite a furious chase by his Ag2r Prévoyance team, he finished in a group 3'20" down.

The attack was controversial, however, as Moreau had crashed earlier in the stage and said afterwards that he was toward the back of the peloton to change shoes due to a broken cleat.

In greatly reducing his chances of victory in the race, the day will be remembered as an unlucky stage for him. So too for a break of six riders who were clear at the time of the attack, and who could have fought it out for the win if it was not for the GC war being waged behind.

Philippe Gilbert (Française des Jeux), Fabian Wegmann (Gerolsteiner), Dmitriy Fofonov (Crédit Agricole), Xavier Florencio (Bouygues Telecom) and David Millar (Saunier Duval - Prodir) did what they could to stay away but were finally overtaken inside the final 40 kilometres.

Boonen gets his second win of this Tour

One day after a near-crash ruined his chance of taking the stage victory, Tom Boonen (Quick.Step – Innergetic) bounced back with a win in Castres. The Belgian extended his lead in the green jersey competition over closest rivals Erik Zabel (Team Milram) and Robert Hunter (Barloworld), who were second and third to the line. Daniele Bennati (Lampre – Fondital), Thor Hushovd (Crédit Agricole) and Bernhard Eisel (T-Mobile Team) were also in the final shakeup but couldn't match Boonen's horsepower.

There were many attacks early on in the stage. 57 kilometres after the start Amets Txurruca (Euskaltel Euskadi) and Pierrick Fedrigo (Bouygues Telecom) went clear and these built up a lead of over eight minutes on the peloton. However they were recaptured with just over a kilometre to go, paving the way for the big bunch finish.

Race leader Michael Rasmussen came home in the peloton and retained his 2'35" lead over Alejandro Valverde. Boonen's stage victory saw him extend his lead in the green jersey competition, increasing his advantage to 20 points over Robert Hunter and 21 over Erik Zabel.

Stage 13 - Saturday, July 21: Albi - Albi, 54km

Alexander Vinokourov (Astana)

Alexandre Vinokourov's loss of time on the race to Briançon saw him slip far back in the general classification but the Astana leader changed his luck on stage 13 when he pulled off a defiant win.

Showing great caution in treacherous conditions, Vino undoubtedly lost time to some of the other riders on the descents but was still strong enough to finish well clear in the race against the clock at Albi.

His final time was 1'14" quicker than that of Cadel Evans, while Vino's team-mates Andreas Klöden and Andrey Kashechkin were 1'39" and 1'44" back respectively. Both crashed during their time trials, showing that Vinokourov's prudence was the wiser option. World champion Fabian Cancellara (CSC) was another to fall and decided to back off after losing time.

The early leader was British rider Bradley Wiggins (Cofidis), who was one of the first starters and who remained on top of the leaderboard until the Astana team leader finished and set a time 2'14" quicker.

There were some unexpected results in the race against the clock. Race leader Michael Rasmussen has no history as a time trial rider and yet he finished 11th, conceding just 2'55" to Vinokourov. His time was just 16 seconds more than known TT competitor Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel). While he was assisted somewhat by improving weather conditions, the surprise result enabled him to hold onto yellow, ending the day exactly a minute ahead of Evans. Alberto Contador moved into third, 2'31" back.

Valverde had started the day second overall and was expected to take time out of Rasmussen. However he was actually caught and passed by the Rabobank rider, placing 48th on the stage and losing a total of 6'08" to Vinokourov. Iban Mayo only fared slightly better, placing 47th and losing 6'04", while Christophe Moreau had a torrid day in finishing125th, 9'26 back.

Contador showed class

The GC hopes of many of those close to the yellow jersey of Michael Rasmussen took a serious denting on the race's first Pyrenean stage as the day's eventual victor Alberto Contador was the only contender to remain with the yellow jersey on the climb of Plateau de Beille.

The two were the strongest on the final ascent and sprinted it out for the victory, with the Spaniard edging out Rasmussen to take his first ever Tour stage. Cadel Evans had started the day second overall and on the early part of the last climb he was the only rider who was strong enough to cover the accelerations by the yellow jersey and Contador. However he went too far into the red and cracked, eventually crossing the line 1'52" back in seventh place.

Stage nine winner Juan Mauricio Soler fared best at limiting his losses, coming home 37" down in third place. Leipheimer was three seconds further back, while Carlos Sastre was the only other rider to finish within a minute of the leading duo. He was 53" down.

Klöden had ridden strongly in the Albi time trial and many expected him, TT victor Alexandre Vinokourov and their team-mate Andrey Kashechkin to make a bid for success. However it was not to be. Klöden came in with Evans for fifth, Kashechkin was 2'23" back in ninth, while Vinokourov had a serious form meltdown and lost a staggering 28'50".

Oscar Pereiro, Alejandro Valverde and Haimar Zubeldia fared considerably better but nevertheless finished just outside the top ten and conceded 3'45".

Six riders went clear early on in a break, namely José Ivan Gutierrez, Francisco Perez (Caisse d'Epargne), Amets Txurruka (Euskaltel – Euskadi), Carlos Barredo (Quick.Step – Innergetic), Antonio Colom (Astana) and Aleksandr Kuschynski (Liquigas). They were trying to build a big enough buffer to go for the stage win but powerful driving by the Saunder Duval – Prodir team, working in the misguided hope that Iban Mayo would win the stage [he finished 9'31" back] meant that the break's advantage was seriously eroded. Everything came back together on the final climb up to Plateau de Beille, where Contador and Rasmussen scrapped it out for the win and the others tried to limit their losses.

After a dramatic collapse the day before, Alexandre Vinokourov raced to a defiant win in Loudenvielle Le Louron to put the smile back on the faces of the Astana team. He made the most of his newfound freedom as a non-GC contender, going clear in a large early break and then getting the better of those riders on the final climb of the Col du Peyresourde.

Vino went over the summit alone and then dropped down to finish 51 seconds ahead of Kim Kirchen (T-Mobile) and Haimar Zubeldia (Euskaltel-Euskadi). Juan Jose Cobo (Suanier Duval) was a further seven seconds back.

Maillot jaune Michael Rasmussen and Alberto Contador renewed their mano a mano battle on the final climb, with huge surges by the Spaniard lifting both clear of the other GC contenders. Contador seemed stronger than his rival and gapped him several times, but Rasmussen was able to claw his way back on. He admitted after the stage that he was at the point of cracking.

The two came home together to place 10th and 11th, 5'31" behind Vinokourov, and remain 2'23" apart in the general classification. Evans was 13th, 1'16" seconds further back, while Mikel Astarloza, Levi Leipheimer, Andreas Klöden, Alejandro Valverde and Carlos Sastre all finished in this group and lost further time to the two front runners.

The action resumes on Wednesday with the final Pyrenean stage but due to the timegaps, it appears likely that the Tour is now a two-horse race. The question is, which horse will it be?
