Nine days of racing completed, twelve to go. As the riders take a breather on the first rest day of the 2007 Tour, Cyclingnews' Shane Stokes takes a look at what has happened thus far.

The suspense builds. After over a week of competition, the 2007 Tour de France is very much a wide-open affair. There have been three race leaders since the Tour start in London last Saturday week, but a clear picture has yet to emerge as to who will be the definitive contenders for the final yellow jersey of the race.

For now, Michael Rasmussen (Rabobank) is firmly wrapped up in the maillot jaune, following a trademark long-distance attack across the Alps which also netted him the stage win plus the lead in the King of the Mountains classification. However, by his own admission, the Dane is no time triallist and so he will need to get considerably more time in the remaining uphill stages if he is to stand a chance of winning the Tour overall.

Pre-race favourites Alexandre Vinokourov and Andreas Klöden have had a rough start to their GC aspirations, due to both being badly injured in crashes last Thursday. Vinokourov suffered deep cuts to both knees plus other smaller injuries, while Klöden fractured his tailbone. They lost time to some of the other GC contenders on stage eight but are hoping to feel stronger after Monday's rest day.

Spanish dark horse Iban Mayo surprised many by finishing second on stage eight and is currently second overall in the general classification. He won on Alpe d'Huez in 2003 but has done nothing in the Tour since then; however, if he keeps riding like he did on Sunday, he is in the hunt for the final victory. So too Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne), Christophe Moreau (Ag2r Prévoyance), Frank Schleck (Team CSC), Cadel Evans (Predictor – Lotto) and Andrey Kashechkin (Astana), all of whom were the strongest of those who sought to limit the gains of Rasmussen and Mayo on Sunday.

Less prominent were Denis Menchov (Rabobank), Carlos Sastre (CSC), Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel) and Oscar Pereiro (Caisse d'Epargne). These, like Vinokourov and Klöden, will hope to be back to full sharpness when the racing recommences with a tough 159.5 kilometre stage to Briançon on Tuesday.

Talented young T-Mobile rider Linus Gerdemann will start the day second overall, having dropped out of yellow on Sunday's stage. He and Kim Kirchen are likely to share team leadership following the unfortunate crash-provoked withdrawal of Michael Rogers. It's probably a couple of years too early to consider Gerdemann a contender for Tour honours, but he's certainly got a decent chance of holding onto the white jersey as best young rider.

Like their compatriot Rogers, Australians Robbie McEwen and Stuart O'Grady both ended their Tour campaigns on Sunday. The hunt for the green jersey has now been whittled down to a handful of riders and even though Tom Boonen currently has the edge on Erik Zabel – both in terms of points and his finishing speed - the German is a better climber and could pick up useful points on the tougher stages.

Of course, Rasmussen will aim to do precisely that in the KOM competition. He's 40 points clear of Sylvain Chavanel (Cofidis - Le Crédit par Téléphone) and 52 up on Gerdemann; there is a long way to go to Paris but few would bet against him at this point.

Prologue - Saturday, July 7: London ITT, 7.9 km

It was billed by some as a battle of the Brits, but Swiss rider Fabian Cancellara was the rider who raced to the first maillot jaune of the 2007 Tour de France. Tearing around a spectacular 7.9 kilometre course in London which was littered with historical and touristic landmarks, CSC's world time trial champion overhauled previous leader Andreas Klöden (Astana) by a considerable 13 seconds.

George Hincapie (Discovery Channel) had hoped to make up for last year's second place by taking yellow but instead had to be content with third on the stage, 23 seconds back. World pursuit champ Bradley Wiggins (Cofidis) was best of the home riders in fourth, while David Millar (Saunier Duval – Prodir) showed he was some way off top form with 13th place. He was disappointed not to have done better, but was elated by the massive crowds which turned out to watch the Grand Départ.

Klöden's ride put him best of the GC contenders. His Astana team-mates Alexandre Vinokourov and Andrey Kashechkin performed solidly, placing seventh and 16th, and the overall strength of their challenge saw them net the team prize for the day.

Other overall challengers such as Cadel Evans (Predictor-Lotto), Michael Rogers (T-Mobile), Oscar Pereiro (Caisse d'Epargne), Linus Gerdemann (T-Mobile), Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel), Denis Menchov (Rabobank) and Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne) all finished very close together, with just four seconds separating them at the end of the high-speed test. Klöden was therefore the early winner in this battle for a psychological edge, taking 23 seconds out of Evans and slightly more out of the others.

Massive crowds again turned out for stage one of the Tour, which went to triple green jersey winner Robbie McEwen (Predictor – Lotto) after a remarkable recovery. The Australia was one of many involved in a crash with approximately 23 kilometres to go and despite being considerably delayed, managed to not only get back to the bunch but to win the 181 man gallop to the line.

The day's supporting roles were played by Thor Hushovd (Crédit Agricole) and Tom Boonen (Quickstep-Innergetic), second and third into Canterbury, and by home favourite David Millar (Saunier Duval – Prodir). Inspired by a Chris Boardman lone attack he saw from the side of the road when the Tour last visited Britain in 1994, the Scot went clear 40 kilometres after the start and spent much of the day ahead of the bunch. His reward was the polka dot jersey of best climber.

Fabian Cancellara had a stress-free day thanks to his CSC team and held on to the race lead.

Day three of the Tour de France saw the race finish in the cycling Mecca of Gent, and here the Belgian QuickStep – Innergertic riders Gert Steegmans and Tom Boonen gladdened the hearts of home fans when they galloped in first and second on the stage. Steegmans was ostensibly leading out the sprint for the 2005 world champion but Boonen didn't have the horsepower to come around at the end. However he did get the biggest cheer of the day when presented with the green jersey as the new leader of the points classification.

Former stage winner Filippo Pozzato (Liquiqas) showed his good form with a third-place finish. Robbie McEwen finished sixth and said after the stage that he was suffering the after-effects of his crash one day earlier.

He was lucky to miss out on another big pileup inside the final two kilometres of the stage. A large number of riders came down, including race leader Cancellara, Hushovd, Hincapie and Francisco Ventoso (Saunier Duval). Other riders were caught behind the fallers and watched the finish in the big screens, aware that UCI rules meant that they would be given the same time as the winner.

Mark Cavendish was one of those who ended up on the tarmac. The T-Mobile tour debutant was having a baptism of fire, crashing on Sunday and thus missing out on his chance of going for a home win, and then hitting the deck hard in Gent.

Stage 3 – Tuesday, July 10: Waregem - Compiègne, 236 km

Describing his finishing effort as the hardest final kilometre of his life, race leader Fabian Cancellara impressed greatly with an audacious stage win into Compiègne. The CSC rider was inspired perhaps by his Paris-Roubaix victory last year and attacked hard on the run into that Classic's start point, overhauling a break within sight of the line and then holding off Erik Zabel (Milram), Danilo Napolitano (Lampre – Fondital) and Boonen for the win.

The yellow and green jerseys remained on the shoulders of Cancellara and Boonen, while the polka-dot maillot migrated to the shoulders of Stéphane Augé (Cofidis). He had started the day level on points with Millar, but slipped away in a break and added to his haul.

Cavendish had a better showing, placing ninth and finishing as best young rider on the stage.

Stage 4 – Wednesday, July 11: Villers-Cotterêts - Joigny, 190 km

Former maillot vert Thor Hushovd took his first victory in ten months when he galloped home ahead of South African Robert Hunter (Barloworld) and triple world champ Oscar Freire (Rabobank). The victory was a big confidence booster to the Norwegian rider, who last won a race when he took stage six of the Vuelta a España in Léon.

As has been the case in each of the bunch finishes, no one team had been strong enough to set up a real sprinter's train at the end of the stage. However Hushovd benefited from a strong leadout by Crédit Agricole team-mate Julian Dean to blast home, just holding off a fast-finishing Hunter.

Freire's third place suggested that the Spaniard was getting over a reoccurrence of the saddle sore injury which blighted his 2005 season. There was no change to the jersey classifications in the race, with Cancellara, Boonen and Augé continuing to hold the yellow, green and polka-dot jerseys.

Stage 5 – Thursday, July 12: Chablis - Autun, 184 km

One day after saying he was aiming for victory on stage five, Liquigas rider Filippo Pozzato delivered on that promise when he finished first into Autun.

The talented 25 year-old Italian came out best in a frenzied 74 man sprint to the line, beating Freire, Daniele Bennati (Lampre-Fondital), Kim Kirchen (T-Mobile) and the new points leader Zabel.

Fabian Cancellara (CSC) finished twelfth and retained his race lead for yet another day.

The biggest news from the hilly stage was the crashes of Astana leaders Andreas Klöden and Alexandre Vinokourov. Klöden fractured his coccyx but was able to finish in the main bunch; Vinokourov hit the deck a little later in the stage and suffered bad cuts to both knees. Six riders from his team dropped back to help him but despite a frantic chase, he finished in a group 1'20" back and dropped to 81st overall.

Both he and Klöden went to hospital for treatment. Vino received a number of stitches to both knees, finally leaving there around midnight, but confirmed that he would start the following morning.

Two years after his last victory in the Tour de France, Tom Boonen blasted back to the top of the podium when he won a mass charge to the line in Bourg-en-Bresse. The final metres of the stage were a battle between past world champions, with Boonen finishing ahead of Oscar Freire. Erik Zabel was third, while Robbie McEwen finished back in 13th and conceded that mathematically, his battle for a fourth green jersey was over.

Boonen's victory plus the points picked up in two intermediate sprints saw him move back into the lead of that classification, ending the day 11 points clear of Zabel. Race leader Cancellara finished in the same time as the sprinters and preserved his comfortable 33 second lead over Klöden. However, with the mountains due to start on stage 7, he knew that it was his last podium appearance in yellow.

The day was marked by a marathon 190 kilometre solo attack by British rider Bradley Wiggins. He built a maximum lead of over 17 minutes but was hauled back with just seven kilometres to go.

Riding with impressive strength despite his youth, 24 year old Linus Gerdemann gave a boost to those who want to see a change in cycling when he was victorious on the first real mountain stage of this year's Tour. The T-Mobile rider went clear in an early break and then attacked on the final climb of La Colombière, hitting the summit 18 seconds clear of Iñigo Landaluze (Euskaltel – Euskadi) and then descending at breakneck speed to reach the finish 40 seconds clear.

Last year's most aggressive Tour rider David de la Fuente (Saunier Duval – Prodir) was third. A 35 man group containing all the pre-race favourites finished 3'38" back. The time gaps meant that Gerdemann ended the day with a solid grip of the yellow and white jerseys, and with the stage victory plus the day's most aggressive rider award also to his credit.

As a member of the T-Mobile team, Gerdemann is subject to perhaps the toughest anti-doping programme in sport. One day prior to his win he underwent blood volume testing designed to detect transfusions and this fact plus the strong anti-doping message he stressed after the stage was a positive sign for the sport.

The stage was also marked by the non-participation of triple world champ Oscar Freire, who finally pulled out of the Tour due to a lingering saddle sore problem. He had begun the day fifth overall and was third in the points classification.

The first summit finish of the 2007 Tour de France brought some big upheavals, with several big names struggling in the wake of Michael Rasmussen's stage winning success. The Danish Rabobank rider went on the attack early on the stage and shelled his breakaway companions Antonio Colom (Astana) and David Arroyo (Caisse d'Epargne) on the final climb of Tignes.

Rasmussen finished 2 minutes and 47 seconds ahead of a resurgent Iban Mayo (Saunier Duval – Prodir), who is returning to his top form after three years in Tour wilderness. Fellow Spaniard Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne) was 25 seconds further back in third, coming home one second ahead of home favourite Christophe Moreau (Ag2r Prévoyance), Frank Schleck (Team CSC), Cadel Evans (Predictor – Lotto) and Andrey Kashechkin (Astana).

Overnight race leader Linus Gerdemann finished 20th, 5'05" behind Rasmussen, and dropped to second overall. He is 1'56" ahead of Mayo and remains in the white jersey as best young rider.

Several top names suffered on the 165 kilometre stage. Gerdemann's T-Mobile team-mate Michael Rogers was race leader on the road but crashed out of the break on the dangerous descent of the Cornet de Roselend. He dislocated his shoulder and withdrew, as did other crash victims such as Stuart O'Grady (CSC) and Ivan Parra (Cofidis). Sprinters Robbie McEwen and Mark Cavendish also left the race, the former finishing outside the time limit and the latter withdrawing during the stage.

As for GC contenders Denis Menchov (Rabobank), Carlos Sastre (CSC), Levi Leipheimer (Discovery Channel), Oscar Pereiro (Caisse d'Epargne), Andreas Klöden and Alexandre Vinokourov, these all finished between 3'35" and 4'29" behind Rasmussen. They are by no means out of the race, but will have to raise their game in the stages ahead if they are to have a chance of final victory.
