93rd Tour de France - ProTFrance, July 1-23, 2006Main Page Results Overall standings Stage Details Live report Previous Stage Next Stage Rest Day 2 - Monday, July 17: GapTour 2006 still wide openIt was billed as the most unpredictable Tour in years and so it has proved. Cyclingnews’ Shane Stokes looks back at an exciting week of racing, documenting how some contenders have fallen by the wayside while others have set up a possible bid for yellow in the final week. Fourteen down, six to go: the 2006 Tour de France is over two thirds of the way through, but the race is still very much an open affair. The first seven riders are all within four minutes of the yellow jersey and with three tough mountain stages, two road stages and a long time trial still to come, a ding-dong battle looks set to be waged between here and Paris. Stage 9 – Tuesday, July 11: Bordeaux - Dax, 170 kmOscar Freire won his second stage of this year’s Tour de France when he nipped past Erik Zabel and Tom Boonen inside the final 50 metres of the race to Dax. Freire is known as an explosive rider who is capable from coming from behind very close to the line, but he was very nearly overhauled by another rider who is even more proficient at the same tactic, Robbie McEwen. The Australian was hemmed in but pulled off an audacious move to veer left through a gap and close to within a few centimetres of the triple world champion by the line. However it was Oscar’s day, the Spaniard providing further proof that he is back after his health problems of last season. The flat stage was the first after Monday’s rest day and was marked by a three man move which went clear after 7 kilometres. Christian Knees (Milram) was joined by Stephane Augé (Cofidis) and Walter Beneteau (Bouygues Telecom) but they were gobbled up with four kilometres to go. Tom Boonen was keen to take a win but nerves and over-eagerness saw him hit the front too far from the line. Race leader Serguei Gonchar (T-Mobile) finished safely in the main bunch and retained his yellow jersey. Stage 10 – Wednesday, July 12: Cambo-les-Bains - Pau, 193 kmFollowing stage wins by Jimmy Casper (Cofidis) and his own team-mate Sylvain Calzati (AG2R), Cyril Dessel continued the strong French showing in this Tour when he took over the yellow jersey on the first of two days in the Pyrenees. He and Spaniard Juan Miguel Mercado (Agritubel) had originally gone clear as part of a 15 man move just after the first sprint, 37 kilometres after the start in Cambo-les-Bains. This group opened up 11 minutes over the peloton, which was being driven hard at times by the T-Mobile team despite the fact that their race leader Serguei Gonchar was suffering considerably on the climbs. Dessel and Mercado scarpered from the break with approximately 50 kilometres to go and hit the line 56 seconds clear of Euskaltel-Euskadi’s Iñigo Landaluze and further ahead again of four other survivors from the break. The bunch was a full 7’23 back. Although the Frenchman stood to take both the yellow and mountains jerseys, as well as earning AG2R the lead in the teams' classification, he told Mercado that he was going to sprint for the stage. This prompted the Spaniard to stop working, an energy saving tactic that proved to be just enough for him to land his second-ever Tour stage win. He also moved up to second overall. Stage 11 – Thursday, July 13: Tarbes - Val d'Aran/Pla-de-Beret (Spain), 208 kmIt was a stage where many of the contenders for this year’s Tour fell by the wayside, but strong climbing by the Phonak captain meant that stage 11 went down as The Day of the Floyd. After doing the bulk of the work towards the top of the final climb, 30 year old Floyd Landis finished right on the heels of likely Vuelta 2005 winner Denis Menchov (Rabobank) and a resurgent Levi Leipheimer (Gerolsteiner) at the Spanish ski resort of Val d'Aran/Pla-de-Beret. Cadel Evans (Davitamon-Lotto) and Carlos Sastre (CSC) were with the first three on the mountain but ultimately conceded 17 seconds. As for overnight leader Cyril Dessel, the AG2R-Prévoyance rider fought valiantly to retain the yellow, but came in 4'45 behind Landis. Factoring in the eight second bonus the American gained for third, Dessel fell behind in the overall standings by exactly the same margin. Yet, however much he would have liked to have retained yellow, he was far from the most disappointed rider that evening. Amongst those losing their chance of overall victory were the entire Discovery Channel team – their best finisher was José Azevedo, a considerable 4’10 back in 15th place. Yaroslav Popovych, Paolo Savoldelli and George Hincapie were even further adrift. Other notable names to fall by the wayside were Damiano Cunego (Lampre-Fondital), Oscar Pereiro (Caisse d’Epargne-Illes Balears), Stefano Garzelli (Liquigas), Serguei Gonchar (T-Mobile) and José Rujano (Quick.Step-Innergetic), all between 10’03 and 40’32 back. Andreas Klöden (T-Mobile) and Gilberto Simoni (Saunier Duval) limited their losses to 1’31 and 4’10, respectively, but would have hoped to have done better on the first summit finish. As for former stage winner Iban Mayo, his stuttering career took another downturn when he was dropped early on and pulled out of the Tour. Stage 12 – Friday, July 14: Luchon - Carcassonne, 211 kmFollowing the disappointments of stage 11, Discovery Channel team manager Johan Bruyneel said that the team would be targeting the consolation of stage wins for the remainder of the race. They didn't have long to wait; Yaroslav Popovych went clear with three others - Alessandro Ballan (Lampre), Oscar Freire (Rabobank) and Christophe Le Mevel (Credit Agricole) – after 100 kilometres of racing, attacked repeatedly in the final run-in to the line, then raced clear to take his first-ever Tour stage victory. Freire seemed to be holding back and indeed didn't even sprint against Ballan for second place, even though he was chasing points for the green jersey competition. This prompted speculation that the Discovery Channel and Rabobank teams may have come to an arrangement, with the first squad being unopposed by Freire for the stage win providing they would help the latter in the mountains. While neither team manager would admit to such an arrangement after the stage, Freire’s disappointment was clear to be seen. Le Mevel was also downcast, as he was unable to deliver on a French stage win on Bastille Day. Race leader Floyd Landis came in as part of the main bunch 4’25 back and retained yellow. Stage 13 – Saturday, July 15: Béziers - Montélimar, 231 kmTrusty warhorse Jens Voigt boosted morale on the CSC team when he won the 13th stage of the Tour, outsprinting Oscar Pereiro (Caisse d'Epargne) to the line. The longest and hottest day of the race was marked by a break of five riders who went clear after 23 kilometres of racing and, riding well together, Voigt, Pereiro, Manuel Quinziato (Liquigas), Andriy Grivko (Milram) and Sylvain Chavanel (Cofidis) opened up a massive lead over the Phonak-led peloton. Floyd Landis’ men seemed in no urgency to chase and after Voigt and Pereiro finished a huge 29’57 ahead of the peloton, confirmed that they intended to give away the yellow jersey and so save their energy for later in the race. Former team member Pereiro was the delighted beneficiary, finishing the day 1’29 ahead of Landis and, crucially, holding yellow for the first time in his career. Stage 14 – Sunday, July 16: Montélimar - Gap, 181 kmStage win number three for France. Former national champion Pierrick Fedrigo (Bouygues Telecom) got the better of a win-hungry Salvatore Commesso (Lampre-Fondital) at the end of an undulating transition stage from Montélimar to Gap. Commesso had taken two stages in the past and was probably the favourite in the two up sprint, but a cool head and calm tactics by Fedrigo meant that the Italian was forced to lead for the final kilometre and ultimately lost the stage. The two leaders were the survivors of an earlier break of six which went clear after 34 kilometres. Also present were Mario Aerts (Davitamon-Lotto), Matthias Kessler (T-Mobile), David Canada (Saunier Duval) and Rik Verbrugghe (Cofidis), but the latter three crashed out on a sharp right corner with 40 kilometres remaining. Canada and Verbrugghe were the worst hurt, suffering broken bones, while Kessler was able to limp on in to the finish. Fedrigo and Commesso dropped Aerts on the final climb and while the fragmenting bunch was getting close at the summit, the two were able to hold off a last gap chase by Christian Vandevelde to sprint it out for the win. Race leader Oscar Pereiro finished in the bunch, seven seconds back, and retained yellow going into the rest day.
