"This was enjoyable. I was feeling comfortable so I decided to attack because I wanted to win this way."

"I have seen everyone with doubts. When they attack, immediately they stop, and today it was a day to risk. I was waiting for a war between them."

"I did not come with the objective of the general classification. In the Vuelta a Burgos I had a fever and I stopped for one week, which made me lose confidence. But now I see the things differently and there are left two weeks where changes can happen."

"I like the stages of Aitana and Abantos, that pass near my home. I prefer these wins rather than to be fourth in the general classification."

Oscar Sevilla (Kelme, 1st GC)

"I saw yesterday that Beloki was feeling bad, but I did not expect a failure from such a regular rider. There will be some reason, perhaps illness. It surprised me."

"The race is very open. Casero showed he was very strong, he surprised me with his strength over the final kilometres because he made the climb very hard. I don't want to think about getting to Madrid as the leader, but about keeping going day to day."

"Casero and Heras are fresher because they did not dispute the top places in the Tour, although I am not too bad. Heras has never stopped being a rival. There are still [the climbs of] Aitana and Abantos left, and it's certain that they will try to put us against the ropes."

Angel Casero (Festina, 2nd GC)

"I felt good and I believe that tomorrow I can ride a good race against the clock. Today we have seen that we are all human and we can have a bad day. Today it touched Beloki, I hope that it touches me less. I saw that he had a bad moment on the climb, because he tried to stay with me but it was impossible."

"At the moment I am feeling well, tomorrow will be an important day. I do not know if I will win, but I will try to."

Joseba Beloki (ONCE, 70th stage)

Former leader Joseba Beloki turned a bad day into a complete shocker as he lost contact on the category 1 Port d'Envalira, around 100 kilometres. He looked in bad shape then, accompanied by several of his teammates, but lost an enormous amount of time over the last three climbs. It was a sad way to bow out of the Vuelta, and Beloki was in tears during the stage.

"From the beginning I couldn't go, and it will be necessary to look for an explanation because it is not normal," he said. "I don't know what happened."

"The greatest hope of my life was to be the leader. The worst thing is not to be able to demonstrate to the team that I can be at the level to which they have worked. The world does not end, but many things finish".

Pantani abandons

Marco Pantani (Mercatone Uno) surprised no-one today when he abandoned during the toughest stage of the Vuelta, from Alp to Andorra. Before the stage he was in 117th place at 1:06:39, and clearly was finding the going hard. He also renounced any intentions of competing in the World Championships in Lisbon, and will instead concentrate his energies on building his team for next season.

A total of 12 riders pulled out of today's stage: Leif Hoste (Domo), Luciano Pagliarini (Lampre), Elio Aggiano (Mapei), Marco Pantani, Ermanno Brignoli and Fabiano Fontanelli (Mercatone Uno), Renato Silva (Milaneza-MSS), Antonio Varriale (Ceramiche Panaria), Nacor Burgos (Fuenlabrada), Paolo Savoldelli, Biagio Conte and Alessio Galletti (Saeco)

Simoni to leave Lampre

The rumours have been confirmed that Giro d'Italia winner Gilberto Simoni will leave Lampre-Daikin next season. Simoni has been linked with Cantina Tollo, but that now seems unlikely. He is also reportedly talking to Cofidis.

His current team manager Beppe Saronni said that "We have made our offer two months ago, but he has not answered us. He will not re-enter in our program."

Simoni on the other hand said that "It is not a divorce, it's only a slow negotiation, and there are no new developments yet."

The negotiations might take a while, after Lampre's 2002 line up was announced today, with the notable absence of Simoni. The new riders are Pavel Tonkov (Mercury), Milan Kadlec (Mobilvetta), Alessandro Cortinovis (Colpack), and neo-pro's Alberto Loddo and Manuel Quinziato.

The rest of the team is: Sergio Barbero, Raivis Belohvosciks, Simone Bertoletti, Rubens Bertogliati, Juan Manuel Garate, Matteo Frutti, Ludo Dierckxsens, Luciano Pagliarini, Mariano Piccoli, Marco Pinotti, Maximilian Sciandri, Jan Svorada, Zbigniew Spruch, and Johan Verstrepen.

Latest UCI women's rankings

After the final round of the World Cup in Rotterdam, won by Germany's Judith Arndt, the UCI has released its post World Cup rankings. The overall winner of the World Cup, Anna Millward (Saturn) is now 108 points clear of her closest rival Zinaida Stahurskaia, who is currently trying to defend her last year's win in the Giro Della Toscana Femminile. Stahurskaia also has to win the World Championships again to retain her points, while Millward will lose 164 points at the end of the month because there are no Olympics this year. Unless Stahurskaia (or perhaps Melchers) has an excellent end of season again, Millward will remain number one in 2001.

The all conquering Saturn team continues to extend its lead in the teams rankings, and with riders like Millward, Rossner, Bessette and Bruckner, this is not too surprising.

Liese to go for the Hour Record

German time trial specialist Thomas Liese (Team Nürnberger) will make an attempt on the World Hour Record on the Berlin velodrome in one month. He has named October 20 as the day that he will try to beat Chris Boardman's 49.441 kilometres, set last year in Manchester on a 'traditional' bike approved by the UCI.

61st Circuit Franco-Belge

The 61st edition of Circuit Franco-Belge (2.4) will take place this year from September 27-30. The race is in four stages over four days, and occurs eight days before the Paris-Tours World Cup and two weeks before the World Championships.

The race starts outside Moeskroen's main football stadium on Thursday, September 27, with a 174 kilometre stage that finishes at Mont de l'Enclus. A few forays into French territory follow, before the race finishes in Doornik on Sunday, September 30. There is no time trial this year.

Alexia Alluminio sign three riders

Next year's Alexia-Alluminio squad, which contains sprinter Ivan Quaranta, has signed three riders from other teams. Paolo Lanfranchi (Mapei), Paolo Valoti, (Alessio), and Latvian neo-pro Andriss Reiss, who was second in this year's Baby Giro.

Mobilvetta adds Colombian

Following on from the addition of Russian Denis Bondarenko, Stefano Guiliani's Mobilvetta team has added another promising young rider to its ranks. 22 year old Colombian Felipe Laverde-Jimenez signed for three years today, and is considered to be a good prospect for the mountains. He finished 6th in the Giro d'Abruzzo, won by Danilo di Luca, and holds three Colombian national titles in the juvenile division.

Qinghai - Tibet 2001, adventure in China

After an epic ten day battle in some of the remotest mountain regions on the roof of the world, Mongolian Ulzii Orshikh, riding for the Marco Polo cycling club emerged the victory of the 2nd Qinghai - Tibet cycling race. Held in harsh conditions, with altitudes close to 5000 meters, and rolling to mountainous courses the race was a true test of endurance. Added to that were the long bus transfers over terrible roads, followed by nights in primitive army camps as the race was so far from civilization.

Despite the presence of a strong South African National team (Neil MacDonald won 3 stages) and the Zaxby's team from the USA, it was once again the Kazakhstan National team that were the big competition for the Marco Polo squad. The race started in Xining, central China and slowly wound its way west and south to finish in front of the Potala Palace in Lhasa Tibet. Ulzii and his totally committed teammates (Rob Conijn, Lex Nederlof, John Tarkington, Damir Iratov and Nathan Dahlberg) were pushed to the limit all the way, and finally Assan Bazayez (Kazakhstan) finished dead equal on time, but with better stage places, Ulzii was declared the winner.

Despite the intensity of the race, at the end an exhausted field celebrated together, as this is also a tale of survival as well as a race. For all involved it was a unique experience not only racing in such vastly different and extreme conditions, but to witness first hand some of the grandest scenery in the world, huge inland lakes, massive mountains and deep gorges, truly unforgettable!
