Roger Hammond, riding his first cyclo-cross of the season on the back of only a week's serious training, signalled his return with an emphatic win in round 4 of the National Trophy series at Heather in Leicestershire on Sunday.
Hammond, who has undergone two operations to remove a large cyst since the end of the road season, pulled away from the large field with only Belgian visitor Geert Vandaele for company. The pair opened up a lead of nearly a minute and the only question to be resolved was who would win the final sprint. But coming into the final road finish, Hammond had put sufficient distance into his main challenger to make a sprint unnecessary.
Former series leader Matt Ellis pulled away from the other chasers to finish alone in third place, but sixth was enough for Barrie Clarke to retain the leaders' jersey heading into the final round at Eastway after Christmas.
Isla Rowntree confirmed her superiority in the women's series with a third consecutive win. Victoria Wilkinson, who led Rowntree briefly in the previous round, was again in second place, but on this occasion over two minutes in arrears. The women's fields have been disappointingly small this year, and it is hoped there will be better support for the National Championship next month at Ipswich, entries for which close on Friday.
Sammy Cotton was again the best of the Brits in the Youth category, but had to settle for third place in the race itself behind Belgian visitors Vens Quincy and Dieter Buyens. Third place was enough for Mick Bell to retain the leaders yellow jersey in the veterans competition, but victory for Martin Eadon, aided and abetted by teammate Martin Booth, reduced his leading margin to just two points going into the final round. Les Lloyd continues to look unassailable in the over 50s category, Les finishing fifth overall in the veterans race.
There was a new name on the top tier of the podium in the Junior event. A month ago, Matthew Pritchard didn't even have a 'cross bike, but with the encouragement of World Class rider Phil Dixon, and now sporting cyclo-cross.com colours, he rode away from his nearest challengers for a clear cut victory. Steven Roach, unbeaten until Sunday in this year's Trophy, still retains the yellow jersey, but knows that he will have a fight on his hands when the national title race takes place next month.
