Vervecken throws out a challenge

World champion Erwin Vervecken won the 5th round of the Superprestige cyclo-cross series in Hoogstraten, Belgium. Vervecken won the sprint finish from his Belgium compatriots Mario De Clercq, and Sven Nys.

It was Vervecken's second win in the series after he triumphed in Sint-Michielsgestel, Netherlands in November.

The race developed as a one on one wrestle between Vervecken and Nys, however they were joined by de Clercq on the last lap. In the sprint finish, the more powerful Vervecken was able to edge out de Clercq with Nys the first to drop of the pace.

In the overall series standings Nys retains his lead over Bart Wellens with Vervecken moving into third place.

The next round of the Superprestige is set down for December 30 in Diegem Belgium
