The inaugural Southern Cross Open and Under 17 Madison was held Saturday at Tempe Velodrome. Judging by the dozens of phone calls received by the organiser earlier in the day the only place it wasn’t raining in Sydney last Saturday was at the venue. The weather was just holding off as a light sprinkling accompanied the first race of the afternoon. From there on the weather improved and a great evening of racing was enjoyed by a strong field of 70 riders aged from 7 to 16 years.
In the U9 Scott Harding was too strong for the others and even managed to win the combined U9/U11 elimination race. Other riders who excelled in their divisions were Matt Guillan (U13B), Tyler McLachlan (U15A), and Rebecca Borgo (U17W). It was great to see 11 riders in the U17 womens’ division where Jackie Kejda and youngster Amanda Spratt made Rebecca work hard for her wins.
The big guns of the U17 division were Warren Scott and Phillip Stokes with Phillip winning the Scratch race to deny Warren a clean sweep of the nights events. The motor paced races were enjoyed by the young riders many of whom had never previously ridden behind a motor. Brad Cox did a fine job on the motorbike keeping the fields strung out for the duration of the races.
The feature race finishing the night was the U17 Madison Cup. Josh Wall and Stephan Weiland made an early break but couldn’t quite get up a lap on the 333m track and were brought back to the bunch after around 14 laps. They still managed to hold the lead past the halfway point and with one sprint to go the first three teams were only separated by a few points. Warren Scott and Kane Brennan won the event just one point clear of the final sprint winners Phil Stokes and Chris Young with Weiland and Wall hanging in for third place.
