Final UCI road rankings of the season

With only a few events left in the road calendar after the World Championships (when the UCI rankings were last updated), there have only been minor changes to the UCI rankings as of November 15. These will be the final rankings of the season according to the UCI.

World number one Erik Zabel may have extended his lead if his two victories in recent Six Day races counted for any points, but they don't seeing as they are track races. He is followed by World Cup champion Erik Dekker (Ned), Davide Rebellin (Ita) and Tour de France winner Lance Armstrong (USA).

By winning the Japan Cup, Gilberto Simoni (Ita) gained sufficient points to finish in fifth place, ahead of Jan Ullrich (Ger) once the final points were tallied. The top 10 are rounded out by Michael Boogerd (Ned), Oscar Sevilla (Spa), Paolo Bettini (Ita) and Francesco Casagrande (Ita). Despite not racing since June after he was sacked by his team, Dario Frigo still holds down 11th place in the classification.

The teams rankings have not changed, with Fassa Bortolo leading Deutsche Telekom and Rabobank as the top three in division I; Alessio, Ag2r and Jean-Delatour in division II; and 05 Orbitel, Stabil Steiermark and AXA-VVZ as the top three in division III.

Vandenbroucke hasn't decided yet

After yesterday's news that Frank Vandenbroucke was "in negotiations" with Marco Pantani's Mercatone Uno squad, a reaction has come from the rider himself. VDB was quoted in De Standaard as saying it was "all lies...Marco Pantani phoned me a few times in the past asking me to come and ride with him. I have given him the answer that Mercatone Uno is not a priority for me. It is not the ideal team for me. He understands that I would choose a Belgian team for the classics. He told me that there will always be a place with him if I don't find work by January or February."

"Mercatone Uno is my third choice," continued VDB. "My preferred team is Domo, and I have still another candidate in the Top 10."

With Jeroen Blijlevens signing for Domo-Farm Frites (see below), there doesn't seem to be much room left for Vandenbroucke, as Patrick Lefevere's team is up to the UCI limit of 25 riders. In the UCI top 10, that leaves Fassa Bortolo, Deutsche Telekom, Rabobank, Mapei-Quick Step, Lotto-Adecco, iBanesto.com, Cofidis (unlikely!), O.N.C.E.-Eroski, US Postal Service (also unlikely, despite not having 25 riders).

Blijlevens to Domo

Jeroen Blijlevens has become the 25th rider in Patrick Lefevere's Domo-Farm Frites squad, finding a place that was potentially open for Frank Vandenbroucke. Lefevere said that he could only take one more rider, and with VDB having other irons on the fire, the balance shifted in favour of Blijlevens.

Blijlevens is a sprinter who has had a very lean run of wins for the past couple of years, his last being a stage in Driedaagse van De Panne in 2000. He was let go from Lotto for not winning enough, but was able to find a good team in Domo-Farm Frites. There he has good teammates such as Servais Knaven, Jans Koerts, Leon Van Bon, Romans Vainsteins and Max Van Heeswijk. Together they should form an very solid sprinting outfit, and Blijlevens might be able to find some of his old sprinting form.

Giro d'Italia presentation in Milan on Saturday

This Saturday, November 17, sees the presentation of the 2002 Giro d'Italia, the first grand tour of the season. The complete route will be unveiled in the Milan Auditorium by Candido Cannavo, director of Gazzetta dello Sport, and race director Carmine Castellano.

The race will start in Groningen (Netherlands), and will travel through Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and France before it hits Italian soil, eventually finishing in Milan. This will be the seventh time in 85 editions of the race that it has started on foreign soil.

Cyclingnews correspondent Tim Maloney will be in Milan on Saturday to cover the presentation in full.

Cees Priem's appeal rejected

The correctional court in Tongeren, Belgium, today dismissed an appeal by Cees Priem in relation to the Priem versus Sunderland case. In April this year, Priem was asked to pay a fine of BEF10,000 (250 euro) after he was found guilty of "unintentionally injuring and wounding" Sunderland during the 1998 Amstel Gold Race. Priem was also had to pay a provisional amount of BEF750,000 (18,750 euro) to AXA/Royale Belge, the insurance company of Palmans-Ideal which has paid the major medical costs, and a similar amount to Scott Sunderland.

Priem had appealed the decision shortly afterwards, but today his appeal was turned down by the judge.

Nicolas Terrados comments on the doping problem

ONCE-Eroski doctor Nicolas Terrados has commented on the doping problem at the 2nd International Congress on Sports Medicine, held in Oviedo this week. Or more correctly, he chose not to address it. "It is not a problem of sports medicine, but a political problem, legislative," he said. "I do not believe that we the sports doctors are stigmatised by that subject. Perhaps it touches me more closely due to what happened in the Tour. I had bad luck. In general, the sports doctor sees it as a problem that is in professional sport".

All the sociologists say that it is in society, and the more competitive a society or a profession is, the more it will happen. For that reason, I think that it is a social problem."

For this reason, Terrados chose not to discuss it at this particular Congress. "On doping, little can be added. Last January, the Spanish Olympic Committee alread held a conference on this subject and also last week in Lausanne. It does not make sense to discuss the same thing because on doping, what more can you say? The laws have been made by the legislators. We look at other more interesting subjects."

The 2nd International Congress on Sports Medicine will be attended by 700 people from 30 different countries. It will finish on November 17.
