Jimenez upset

Jose Maria Jimenez (iBanesto.com) is reportedly upset with team director, Eusebio Unzúe, after he wasn't chosen in the iBanesto Tour team. Tafi returns to racing in Portugal

There is good news for fans of Mapei's Andrea Tafi (and Tafi himself!) as his recovery from surgery is progressing quite well. He will make his return to racing on July 18 at the Volta ao Minho (Por) 2.4, adding that his goals for the rest of the season are "to be competitive, to race and win again in order to give more emotions to my fans."

France adopts Council of Europe's banned drugs list

France has adopted the list drawn up by the Council of Europe for drugs banned in sport. The list includes prohibited substances and methods, and those substances prohibited under certain conditions, and notes out of competition controls. In an appendix dealing with Salbutamol, there is a revision of the allowed concentration.

In addition to this, the UCI is due to introduce its new health regulations tomorrow, July 1, and this includes a revision of the prohibited substances and methods list.

Swiss Federation creates anti-doping taskforce

The Swiss Cycling Federation have set up an special taskforce to combat doping at all levels. The group of experts include former professional cyclist Niki Ruttimann, pharmacologist and biochemist, Dr. Hans Howald, and civil lawyer Margareta Baddeley

This group's main role will be in education, information and prevention of doping, not sanctioning. However, the Swiss Federation affirmed in an official statement that "Doping not only constitutes a health risk, but it is cheating which must be clearly sanctioned on the level of the athletes as well as their entourage (doctors, soigneurs, trainers etc.)."

38 year old Rutimann rode the Tour de France seven times between 1984 and 1990, winning a stage in 1986 and finishing 7th overall. In 1984, he won the Classica San Sebastian.

How would you like to have a black, red and yellow team Saturn LeMond bike suspended above you as you work? It's possible...so long as you take over the heavy responsibility of being the librarian at the Waukesha Public Library, as well as the webmaster.

For six years Jim "Dionysius" Lapaz and his staff have hung a team bicycle in the library to commemorate and help publicize the International Cycling Classic (Superweek). The first couple of years the bikes came from the now defunct Motorola Team (Lance Armstrong's old team), but then the Waukesha based Saturn Team stepped in to provide a bike.

Welsh Cycling Association 12 Hour Time Trial Championship

An emergency WCA Committee meeting was held on Wednesday 28 June 2001 to discuss issues around the organisation and running of this years WCA 12 hour Time Trial Championship on September 2, 2001. The discussion revolved around the difficulties in holding such a large event on roads affected by current roadworks and the further threat of more possible roadworks and by continuing restrictions in the are regarding Foot and Mouth Disease.

Roadworks on the Hereford Road will still be in place but present only a minor problem, which will be dealt with as appropriate on the day. These arrangements will be briefed to all riders prior to the start. Foot and Mouth restrictions are in place between Usk and Raglan and will require the course change to use the A449 dual carriageway between Usk and Raglan.

The decision of the Committee was to plan and promote the event as scheduled on the existing course with the minor alterations to avoid passing directly past Foot and Mouth affected properties. However, if the threatened roadworks on the A40 between Raglan and Abergavenny and planned building repairs in Usk are to be in place on the day of the competition then the Committee has taken the difficult decision that the event would have to be cancelled on the grounds of safety.

Roadworks on many of the long distance courses in Wales and safety concerns regarding other possible courses has meant that it is impractical to find another suitable venue at such short notice. Whilst the Committee are aware of the prestige of this event and its importance to competitors, it is felt that it is better to run no event this year than to compromise the safety and integrity of riders, officials and the event itself.

In the event that the competition is cancelled at short notice entered riders will be contacted and refunded their entry fees as soon as practicable. Another effect of cancelling the 12 hour competition will be that there would be no Welsh Best All Rounder competition result for 2000. This would mean that the premier Welsh Series competition will become the "Champion of Champions" Points competition based on points scored in each of the Welsh Championships held during the year at 25 miles, 50 miles 100 miles and the Hill Climb event.
