Madeleine Lindberg won her third consecutive national road race today when she defeated Södertälje's Maria Östergren in a sprint.

A group of six riders attacked from the start of the 80 kilometer race. Madeleine attacked in the final eight kilomtre lap and only Östergren could follow. This victory means that Team Mälarenergi has won 23 National Championship gold medals over the years.

"I'm so relieved. I never faced any real problems during the race, but I'm still glad it's over," said Madde. "Maria did a great race, and was really strong on the final lap, but I knew I was the better sprinter, so I was never worried."

"She did a strong job controlling the race," said her coach Patrick Serra. "It's never easy beeing the favourite, and the preassure on her was great."

Madeleine Lindberg will spend tomorrow travelling to Sicily, to be at the start of Giro Femminile on Monday. The two week Grand Tour will be used as preparation for Tour de France that starts two weeks after the Giro finishes.
