UCI rankings post HEW and TdF

Following the completion of La Grande Boucle Feminine and the HEW Cyclassics World Cup, the UCI has issued new versions of its women's and men's rankings today. In both individual's ranking, the difference between first and second is just 4 points: Lance Armstrong once again leads the men's from Davide Rebellin, while Anna Millward holds her lead over Zinaida Stahurskaia in the women's.

There weren't too many changes in the men's rankings since last week, although HEW winner Erik Zabel moved himself from 6th to 3rd, and Tour of Denmark winner David Millar jumped from 72nd to 48th. There was a chance in the team's rankings, with Telekom assuming the number one position in front of Fassa Bortolo.

In the women's rankings, LGBF winner Joane Somarriba did improve her position on the scale, although it was only from 20th to 16th. Second placed Fabiana Luperini climbed from 13th to 8th, but there were no other big changes at the top. It should be noted that in women's racing, there is a much smaller hierarchy of points classifications, meaning that the major tours don't count for as much in relative terms compared to the men.

No Rebellin in HEW?

The first version of the official results for the HEW Cyclassics had Davide Rebellin listed as "DNF" - hard to believe when he was in the three man breakaway with Dekker and Bettini which only got caught with five kilometres to go. There was no crash and no mechanical problem, so what happened?

In fact, Rebellin lost his timing chip during the race, so his 14th place finish wasn't registered. His team manager Amadio was at Hamburg airport when he heard about the DNF. He rushed back to the finish and lodged a protest against the results.

After video footage was reviewed, it showed that Rebellin did finish in 14th place, and this affected both the official results and World Cup standings, with Rebellin gaining another 12 points.

The correct HEW Cyclassics results have been posted on Cyclingnews, and the complete World Cup standings as well.

Somarriba given credit back home

The winner of the past two editions of La Grande Boucle Feminine, Joane Somarriba, has been called the "Indurain of the Euskadi" by Iñaki Iglesias, president of the Vizcayan Cycling Federation. One day after Somarriba's triumph in Paris, Iglesias told Radio Popular de Bilbao that it was a "great landmark for Vizcayan cycling and the Basques in general."

"I believe that we can be satisfied because we have the best rider in the world for the big tours. She has won the best women's race and we could, without offending anybody, call her the Indurain of the Euskadi. If Joane keeps on her trajectory, she could easily break the record of Luperini with three Tours, because I think she is extraordinary."

"She is a women's veteran, who knows how to position herself perfectly, when she must go with the attacks of the rest of the competitors. This is what it took to win this Tour, and that is how to win another Tour or more."

The 29 year old was quoted before the Tour as saying that she was finding life difficult was a professional cyclist, and was looking forward to the time when she could do other things. She will probably race another year, although it is not sure whether she will stay with Alfa Lum.

Of course, Iñaki Iglesias would like to see her in an all-Basque team, and exhorted potential sponsors to support her. There are no Spanish professional women's trade teams at the moment, and Iglesias admitted that there were "options...but nothing definite."

Joane Somarriba's next goal is the World Championships in Lisbon in October. "I would like to prepare for it well because it is a hard World Championship, adapted to my physical abilities, and I would like to go well. The time trial is also hard...It is necessary to prepare well for it but I feel in good form."

Moreau to Crédit Agricole

As hinted yesterday, Festina's Christophe Moreau will join Florent Brard in transferring to Credit Agricole next season. He signed a two year contract on Monday, according to team sources. Moreau, winner of the prologue of the 2001 Tour de France, and 4th overall in 2000, was highly sought after by several teams, as he did not have a contract for next year.

Rebellin signs for 2 years with Gerolsteiner

As reported yesterday, Liquigas rider Davide Rebellin has signed with the German Gerolsteiner team for the next two seasons, which will give them a considerable boost in the team rankings with Rebellin's UCI points. In addition, three of Rebellin's Liquigas teammates will ride for Gerolsteiner.

Koerts to Relax?

Jans Koerts had a meeting today with the Spanish Relax-Fuenlabrada team. The Dutch champion, who rode quite well in the HEW Cyclassics race yesterday, has been freed from his contract by Mercury in order to try and find a team to ride for in the Vuelta a España.

Karsten Kroon and Beat Zberg extend with Rabobank

Dutchman Karsten Kroon and Swiss Beat Zberg have extended their contracts with the Rabobank team. 25 year old Kroon signed for another year, while 31 year old Zberg signed for two more season. Beat Zberg will ride with his brother Markus as part of the Rabobank team in the Vuelta.

Camenzind leaves Lampre

Swiss rider Oscar Camenzind will leave Lampre at the end of the season, signing with Swiss team Phonak, according to Dutch newspaper De Telegraaf.

Stefan van Dijk to Lotto

Stefan van Dijk (Not to be confused with Hendrick van Dijck) will leave BankGiroLoterij-Batavus for Lotto-Adecco. Lotto manager Christophe Sercu said that "He is a huge talent, and also has a good mentality."

Van Dijk may take the place of the team's sprinter, as Jeroen Blijlevens is under pressure to retain it. Blijlevens will talk to Sercu after the Ronde van Nederland.

Christophe Sercu has also had a chat with Leon van Bon (Mercury), who has interest from Rabobank as well.

Van Hyfte to CSC

Lotto's Paul van Hyfte has been confirmed as leaving that squad for CSC-Tiscali. He signed a contract with team leader Alex Pedersen last Friday. He will be an important part of CSC's classics team.

Kemna stays with Bankgiroloterij-Batavus

Rudi Kemna, runner up in the Dutch championships, has extended his contract with Bankgiroloterij-Batavus for another season. After his success, and his general consistency as a sprinter, he received offers from several other teams, but chose to stay with Batavus.

D'Hollander has to rest

Lotto's Glenn d'Hollander did not start in the Vuelta a Burgos today, due to pains in his legs. His doctor told him to rest for 10 days, and he will resume competition in the Ronde van Nederland (August 28-September 1). Glenn d'Hollander recently won the Ronde van het Waalse Gewest. Fulco van Gulik took his place in the Vuelta a Burgos.

Sörensen breaks collarbone

CSC's Nikki Sörensen broke his collarbone today during the first stage of the Vuelta a Burgos. Sörensen was in the winning breakaway with Andrea Tafi and Jehudi Schoonacker, when he fell heavily. He will be out of action for at least 4 weeks.

Pro Cycling Tour adds Mercury Cycling Classic of Irvine

Threshold Sports LLC, promoters of the Pro Cycling Tour, today announced the addition of a new event to the 2001 schedule: the Mercury Cycling Classic of Irvine.

"When we saw the opportunity to add this event, we couldn't resist", says Threshold Sports president David Chauner. "It's being held in a high-profile area near one of the nation's great cities, and the company running the race is the same one that produces another Pro Cycling Tour event, the Sea Otter Classic. We're glad to have Irvine as part of the Pro Cycling Tour."

The Mercury Cycling Classic of Irvine will be held on September 23, and will feature $20,000 in cash and prizes. The venue is a 1.4 mile circuit around the Irvine Spectrum Center, a large dining, shopping, and entertainment destination in Southern California.

In conjunction with the Mercury Cycling Classic of Irvine, race promoter GaleForce Sports is working with area schools to provide a schedule of cycling activities for Irvine-area children. Friday, September 21st will feature pro cyclists visiting Irvine schools, sharing stories, bike safety, and riding tips.

Each school will then lay claim to a section of race course on Sunday, displaying home-made banners and cheering for the athletes and teams that visited their respective school.

34th Tour du Limousin

The 34th edition of the Tour du Limousin may not boast a lineup as star studded as the Vuelta a Burgos, but it does have a strong French representation, including national champion Didier Rous (Bonjour). Recent winner of the Regio Tour, Patrice Halgand will head a strong Jean Delatour contingent, including Laurent Brochard and Laurent Roux.

These riders are likely to be the favourites for the four day event, with foreign interest coming from Unai Etxebarria (Euskaltel), Bobby Julich (Credit Agricole) and Alexander Botcharov (Ag2r). In total, 15 teams will ride the race.

The 701.7 km race starts on Tuesday with a 169 kilometre stage from Limoges to St-Yrieix-la-Perche. The second stage from Saint-Just-le-Martel to Ussel, 166.5 kilometres, is likely to be the toughest with the côtes de Sussac (km 44), Saint-Yrieix-le-Déjalat (km 91) and Margerides (km 149).

Teams and principal riders

La Française des Jeux (Durand, Magnien, Nazon), Team Nurnberger, Kelme-Costa-Blanca (Vicioso, De los Angeles), AG2R Prévoyance (Agnolutto, Botcharov), Phonak Hearing Systems, Saint-Quentin-Oktos, Crédit Agricole (Julich), Festina, Cofidis (Mattan), Bonjour (Didier Rous), Equipe de France, Jean Delatour (Brochard, Halgand, Roux), Euskaltel Euskadi (Unai Etxebarria), iBanesto.com, Bigmat Auber 93 (Heulot).

Phil West, Tony Gibb and Frances Newstead will represent GB at the final round of the Track World Cup, in Malaysia this weekend. West and Gibb will be aiming to qualify a GB team for the Madison at the World Championships, whilst Newstead will attempt to qualify a third place in the Individual Pursuit.

Neo pro's baptism of fire

For most of the riders the weekend's USPro National Criterium was just another day in the office, albeit an important one. For Jason Waddell, newly signed to the Jelly Belly squad, it was his first taste of the speed and suffering of racing in the pro ranks. Find out what he thought of it in his frank account of the race.
