Laurent Jalabert (CSC-Tiscali, 1st)
"I started not knowing how I would go. But, the fast beginning of the race helped me. I had only ridden nine criteriums [since the Tour]. However, as the kilometres progressed, I found the feelings again. I was kind of surprised."
"I could not escape solo, I knew that someone would come with me. I therefore attacked then kept going with Casagrande. The selection was then made."
"Against three Italians, the race wasn't won 'in advance'. I also had to prevent any of them getting away: If not, it would have been over. I put in two or three attacks at the end so that they understood I was there."
"I would have been satisfied with second place. I controlled the finish of the race well, because I had reserves. I knew that I would come back after my fall and that I would win races."
"This race is well suited to me, but I have never won it before.
Note: Jalabert's last victory in a Classic was in the Tour of Lombardy, in 1997.
Erik Dekker (Rabobank, 9th, World Cup leader)
"I punctured after 500m of the Jaizkibel climb. I had to change my wheel. If I had not been the leader of the World cup, I would have stopped. Under these conditions to finish 9th is super."
"I am very glad about the victory of Jalabert, because he does not have any points in the World Cup classification [Note: he will not figure in the final standings, as he has to ride at least six races]. Now, I'm especially wary of Rebellin for the overall classification of the World Cup."
Dekker said that at the beginning of the season, his main objective was the Tour de France, but "after Amstel Gold Race, everything changed. Gradually, I'm getting accustomed to success."
Apart from Rebellin, his main rivals are "Vainsteins, Bartoli and Zabel, although there are a lot of points left to win, and the classification can change a lot."

Taking place on Sunday, August 12 is the 25th edition of Subida a Urkiola, a 'recovery race' after today's San Sebastian classic. Last year's winner, Francesco Casagrande, will not be present amongst the 104 starters, however the field is still of high quality.
The list includes UCI number 2 Davide Rebellin (Liquigas), who finished 3rd in today's Clasica San Sebastian, Leonardo Piepoli (iBanesto), winner in 1995 and 1999, and his teammate José-Maria Jimenez, winner in 1994 and 1996. Others include Saeco's Mirko Celestino, Paolo Savoldelli and Laurent Dufaux, Lampre's Oscar Camenzind, Euskaltel-Euskadi's David and Unai Etxebarria, Iñigo Chaurreau, Alberto López de Munain and Iban Mayo, Tacconi's Gianluca Bortolami, and Fuenlabrada's Juan Antonio Flecha.
The race is 160 kilometres long, taking place on roads in the Vizcayan region. The riders have to negotiate to Puerto de Urkiola twice, at km 105 and at the finish. The toughest part of the climb is the last 200 metres.
Teams: iBanesto.com, Euskaltel-Euskadi, Kelme-Costa Blanca, ONCE-Eroski, Lampre-Daikin, Liquigas-Pata, Mercatone Uno-Stream TV, Euskadi selection, Tacconi Sport-Vini Caldirola, Jazztel Costa De Almeria, Colchon Relax-Fuenlabrada and Saeco.
The record for the number of wins in this race is held by Julio Jimenez, with successive wins in the 1962, 1964, and 1965 editions. [This race was first held in 1931, but there have been a number of continuity gaps].
Giuseppe Martinelli, team manager of Mercatone Uno-Stream TV, has determined his team for tomorrow's Subida a Urkiola in Spain, notably without Marco Pantani: Marco Velo, Daniel Clavero, Oscar Mason, Daniele De Paoli, Maurizio Caravaggio, Michael Andersson, Cristian Moreni, and Igor Astarloa.
Track rider Theo Bos has set a new Dutch record for the 1000m time trial, during the World Cup competition in Mexico City, Bos, who is still a junior, rode the distance in 1.02.594 (57.513 km/h), giving him fourth place in the competition. The old record was held by Teun Mulder at 1.03.1, on the same track.
Frenchman Arnaud Tournant won in a time of 1.00.898.
