Vintage Jalabert

When CSC's Laurent Jalabert poured on the power on the lower slopes of the Alto de Jaizkibel today, there was no doubt that he had firm intentions of winning this classic. Accompanied by former San Sebastian winners Francesco Casagrande (Fassa Bortolo) and Davide Rebellin (Liquigas), as well as Casagrande's seemingly indestructible teammate Wladimir Belli, Laurent Jalabert was on his way to his third big race win of the season, after two Tour de France stages.

Jalabert overcame the handicap of having two Fassa Bortolos working against him, and the always dangerous Rebellin, to out sprint them all on San Sebastian's Donostia-Boulevard. An admittedly under-raced Casagrande finished second, with Rebellin and Belli taking third and fourth. Less than half a minute later, Lotto's Serge Baguet came in by himself in 5th place, while Stefano Garzelli (Mapei) led the bunch home for 6th.

The addition of the extra climb of Alto De Gurutze after the Jaizkibel probably helped the breakaway stay clear. It broke the rhythm of the chasing peloton, which had just regrouped after the Jaizkibel. Once again that 8 kilometre, 5.75% climb proved to be the decisive part of the race. A very high tempo was set leading into it, with Fassa Bortolo, Rabobank, and Liquigas driving the peloton in pursuit of Paolo Bettini (Mapei) and Jakob Piil (CSC), who were acting as carrots to a rather large and hungry donkey.

Bettini dropped Piil not long after the climb started, but back in the peloton there was a serious problem for Erik Dekker, who punctured his front wheel. He had to wait for a teammate, and lost time at a crucial moment while he changed it and chased. Dekker was nowhere in sight as first Wladimir Belli rode up to Bettini, then Laurent Jalabert behind increased the pace, taking a handful of riders to the front of the race.

As the top of the climb approached, the leading group formed: Jalabert, Belli, Casagrande, and Rebellin, with the peloton chasing in fragments. The quartet had 47 seconds over the top and had decided to cooperate in order to stay away, despite the obvious imbalance with two Fassa Bortolos there.

The gap grew to over a minute by the bottom of the descent, and although the peloton managed to regroup (with Dekker getting back on), the Mapei/Telekom/Mercatone Uno chase wasn't enough to bring the leaders back, although there were several attempts by individuals.

Jalabert was probably the favourite to win in a four man sprint, so it was hardly surprising that Casagrande and Belli tried the 1-2 with 4 kilometres to go. But Jalabert was also on a good day, and chased them down every time, as Rebellin seemed to be struggling today. The sprint started, and it was Jalabert all the way, with Casagrande managing to throw his bike to take second place in front of Rebellin.

Erik Dekker managed to salvage something out of an unlucky day, taking ninth in the race and another 20 World Cup points. He now has 219, leading Rebellin who is on 144, and Gianluca Bortolami on 121. There are still four races to go in the World Cup, and Dekker certainly has not won it yet.
