By Jeff Jones

It's been over three months since the Amstel Gold Race, the fifth round of the World Cup finished in Maastricht, Holland. The winner of that race, Erik Dekker, became the new leader in the prestigious season long World Cup competition, and he returns to San Sebastian, Spain as one of the favourites for the sixth round of the World Cup.

Dekker won this race last year, courtesy of a surprise move with two kilometres to go, beating Andrei Tchmil and Romans Vainsteins who were the best of a bunch of 53 riders that made it to the finish. It shouldn't have been a huge surprise though, as Dekker had just come off three impressive stage wins in the Tour de France. This year, he added another Tour stage to his palmares, but made no secret of the fact that he preferred to concenrate on winning the World Cup.

In addition to Dekker, there are several other former winners in the San Sebastian field. Udo Bölts (Telekom) won in 1996, so did Davide Rebellin (Liquigas, 1997) and Francesco Casagrande (Fassa Bortolo, 1998-1999). Lance Armstrong will not be riding, as according to directeur sportif Johan Bruyneel, he is too fatigued.

There are of course plenty of other candiates for the win in Clasica San Sebastian 2001. Firstly it is worth noting that an extra hill, the third category Alto De Gurutze, has been incorporated into the parcours at 13.5 kilometres to go. This comes after the category 1 Alto De Jaizkibel, which normally creates several splits (sometimes the winning move) but is over 30 kilometres from the finish, meaning that the race can come back together on the run in to San Sebastian like last year.

Lotto's Andrei Tchmil, Rik Verbrugghe, Serge Baguet and recent Tour de la Region Wallonne winner, Glenn D'Hollander, should all perform well in a race like this, as should Mapei's Stefano Garzelli, Michele Bartoli and Paolo Bettini.

For Domo-Farm Frites, sprinter Romans Vainsteins and Axel Merckx will probably carry the flag, and Euskaltel-Euskadi will be looking for a win from David Etxebarria, Inigo Chaurreau or perhaps Iban Mayo.

CSC-Tiscali's King of the Mountains Laurent Jalabert will line up with brother Nicolas, and the rest of the CSC team, including Danish champion Jakob Storm Piil. The Mercury team could also do with a big win, although winning races doesn't seem to be a big problem for them. With in form riders like Leon Van Bon and Niklas Axelsson, they could pull it off.

Jens Voigt and Bobby Julich might be in the moves for Credit Agricole, while Igor Astarloa is probably Mercatone Uno's best chance. Alessio's Davide Casarotto should find this type of course to his liking.
