Dekker keeps on rolling

Dutchman Erik Dekker (Rabobank) recorded yet another big triumph this season by winning the Clasica San Sebastian in Spain, round seven of the World Cup. In a daring move two kilometres from the finish, Dekker took the rest of field unawares to solo across the line with a comfortable gap to 1999 World Cup winner, Andrei Tchmil. It was Dekker's ninth win so far this year, counting criteriums, and it comes on top of three fine wins in the Tour de France as well as a couple of stages in the Tour of Sweden. With another performance like this, Dekker has to be one of the favourites for Sydney.

The race didn't start very auspiciously for Dekker and his Rabobank team though. The previous night, the boys had arrived late (2300) to their hotel because of an overbooked flight. Rabobank director Theo de Rooy was having kittens (he had managed an earlier flight), but eventually they arrived. The race saw some other big names not starting, for various reasons. Jan Ullrich, Marco Pantani, Laurent Jalabert and Alex Zülle were some, and former winner of this race, Lance Armstrong had to pull out after just 1.5 kilometres suffering from stomach problems.

The tactics of the race seemed to be dictated a little by the TV coverage, as the peloton were content to ride together at a reasonable tempo in the rain and wind for more than three and a half hours. There were no attacks until 127 kilometres to go, when a group of 12 including Mapei rider, Paolo Bettini escaped. They enjoyed some freedom before being re-caught, and the action resumed on the final climbs of the race.

At 85 kilometres to go on the climb of the Azkarate, Elio Aggiano (Vitalicio) managed a small gap to the rest. He was caught by Francesco Secchiari (Saeco), Ellis Rastelli (Liquigas) and Paolo Tiralongo (Fassa Bortolo), and later Isidro Nozal, Mikel Zarrabeitia (ONCE) and Jon Odriozola (Banesto). On the descent of Azkarate, Odriozola attacked and Zarrabeitia eventually caught and dropped him on the final climb of the Jaizkibel, although Odriozola bridged up on the descent.

This obstacle, with its summit at 30 kilometres to go did not destroy the main field, who regrouped to form a 53 rider leading bunch. However, noted sprinters like Erik Zabel, Giovanni Lombardi, Markus Zberg, and Jo Planckaert had been shelled, giving riders such as Tchmil their best chance at top World Cup points.

The size and speed of the bunch were such that Odriozola and Zarrabeitia were finally caught with 12 kilometres to go. Nico Mattan (Cofidis) was next to try, but he too was unsuccessful as the group wound itself up for a mass sprint. However, although the group was large, the sprinting teams were not strong enough to contain everything, especially a flying Dekker as he jumped clear with two kilometres to go.

He managed a small gap and it was enough to carry him to the line with four seconds to spare on Tchmil, who out powered the likes of Romans Vainsteins, Paolo Bettini and Oscar Freire to take 70 World Cup points. It was Dekker's biggest one day win and he credited his teammates and tactics for making it possible.

"The tactics were simple: it was necessary to be at the front of the group on the Cote de Jaizkibel and to have good legs, so I asked my team members to bring me in good conditionto the foot of that climb," said Dekker afterwards. From there, it was a matter of getting to the finish and attacking without fear, something that the Dutchman is well used to doing.

Dekker, who suffered an injury laden early season with a broken elbow in Paris-Nice, still had his feet on the ground, depsite the occasion. He has set a new precedent with his wins this year "Now, I know that second or third place will not be good enough," he said, adding that he try to "maintain his form" for the Ronde van Nederland and the Olympic Games.
