Classica San Sebastian - CDM

San Sebastian, Spain, August 12, 2000

The Classica San Sebastian is the sole Spanish round of the World Cup. Despite this, it does not have a strong history of Spanish winners, especially in recent years. The previous three years have yielded an Italian winner, with Francesco Casagrande winning both in 1998 and 1999. This year, his form is not much different after he placed second in the HEW Cyclassics Cup in Hamburg last weekend.

The parcours of the San Sebastian classic will suit Casagrande with the deciding point in the race, the Category 1 Côte de Jaizkibel situated at 30 kilometres from the finish. Last year, he simply rode the rest off his wheel after an early break had been caught, and soloed in for the win. Can Casagrande repeat three years running?

Riders with a different plan in mind include the Mapei squad, who were on the attack during last week's event without ultimate success. Freire, Bartoli, Bettini, and Merckx should all be firing, while Beltran and Tonkov use it for Vuelta preparation. US Postal is sending a strong team, including its three Olympians Armstrong, Hamilton and Hincapie, an almost identical squad to their Tour team. However, Armstrong (who is known for finishing last and subsequently first in this race) is not in top form at the moment and is again using it as Olympic preparation.

Jan Ullrich and Erik Zabel will be there for the Deutsche Telekom team, with the latter being the protected rider should he survive the Jaizkibel. Laurent Jalabert will start for ONCE, along with Abraham Olano and David Etxebarria and the course should suit these riders. Banesto's Alex Zülle is in good form at the moment, and will be looking to hone things for the Vuelta. They have Castilla Leon winner, Francisco Mancebo as another potential performer in this race.

The Kelme-Costa Blanca squad line up with Javier Otxoa as a strong candidate. Since his solid Tour de France he has successfully competed in a few Spanish races, although the other top Kelme Tour riders will not be here. Festina will present Joseba Beloki and Angel Casero as their guns, but these two may require a few more mountains to perform in this one day race. Pantani and Garzelli will be there for Mercatone Uno, while Rabobank starts with Michael Boogerd, Leon van Bon, Erik Dekker, Maarten den Bakker, Marcus Zberg and tour of Denmark winner, Rolf Sörensen - a very strong line up.

Further down the list, Saeco-Valli&Valli will start with Laurent Dufaux, Salvatore Commesso and Paolo Savoldelli; Polti are with Herve, Virenque and Gotti - back after a long break. The Gonzalez de Galdeano brothers will be Vitalicio's main stars, while Cofidis will be looking for someone other than Franck Vandenbroucke to lead them. David Millar and Nico Mattan may fill this role.

Lotto's Andrei Tchmil won a stage in the Vuelta a Burgos this week and is always dangerous in the closing kilometres. Lampre would dearly love to repeat Gabriele Missaglia's winning feat from last weekend, and Oscar Camenzind may be called upon to do it. 1997 winner, Davide Rebellin (Liquigas) may have some thoughts about that, but he has not been in brilliant form all year.

The remaining teams of Francaise des Jeux, Ag2r-Prevoyance, Memorycard-Jack & Jones, Fassa Bortolo, Farm Frites, Euskaltel-Euskadi, Jazztel-Costa Almeria, and Relax-Fuenlabrada all have riders with outside chances.
