Clasica San Sebastian, World Cup Round 6Spain, August 7, 1999 |
Preview:American Lance Armstrong, recent winner of the Tour de France, will be a main attraction at the 19th edition of the Clasica Saint Sebastian, which is also the 6th race in the World Cup. It is a race over 230 kms through the Spanish Basque region. For personal and other reasons, Armstrong had suggested on the night of his triumph in Paris that he might take an early end to his road season. But the Texan has enjoyed a privileged relation with La Clasica and he assured the organisers in an interview with El Diario Vasco that he would be racing again this year. La Clasica was his first professional race after the 1992 Olympic Games and he finished in last place - his apprenticeship well and truly beginning.By 1994 he won the world championship in Oslo and finished 10th in La Clasica to French rider Armand de las Cuevas in 1995. It is unclear how much form Lance Armstrong will take into the race. Following the Tour there have been a whirl of engagements both in Europe and in the US and the press are saying it is evident that he has lost some form if we take his mediocre result in the Breitling Cup (with Kevin Livingston) as a guide. The race is weakened however by the absence of 1997 and 1998 World Cup winner Italian Michele Bartoli and French rider Laurent Jalabert. Both are injured. With these absences, there are a number of riders who have a chance to shine over the 5 climbs today - the main difficulty being the côte de Jaizkibel which comes 30 kms before the finish. There are a number of other riders coming back from injury or suspension - Jan Ullrich and Frank Vandenbroucke (the current leader of the World Cup) made their return at the Tour of Wallone Regions this week. The Spanish climbers like Fernando Escartin (3rd in the Tour) and Joseba Beloki are also considered potential winners as are the two strong Italians at the moment - last year's winner Francesco Casagrande and David Rebellin. They are joined by a strong contingent of in form Italian riders - Leonardo Piepoli (3rd last year), Alberto Elli and Giuseppe Guerini, who filled the top podium places in the recently completed Tour of Castille and Leon. Report:Italian Francesco Casagrande (Vini Caldirola) repeated last year's success when he won in solo-faship the Clasica Saint-Sébastien over 230 kms. The race was the 6th in the World Cup series and Belgian Andrei Tchmil (4th today) took over the head of the rankings. Casagrande came in to the finish beside the sea with a lead of 0.43 over Belgian Rik Verbrugghe and fellow Italian Giuliano Figueras, They were the fastest finishers of the chasing group.28-year old Casagrande attacked on the Cat 1 Côte de Jaizkibel, the major difficulty of the race. He went away with fellow Italians Leonardo Piepoli and Alberto Elli. He was soon too strong for them and reached the summit (which is 30 kms from the finish) with a 21 second gap on Elli, 1.01 on two riders Piepoli and French rider Jean-Cyril Robin, with the peloton in splinters behind. Casagrande then had to make the journey in Saint-Sébastien, across the autoroutes alone and managed to resist the chasing peloton which had reformed on the descent. So, once more the race was decided by an attack on the Jaizkibel. Also as is usual an early break went away. A group of 13 riders attacked after the first hour and built a maximum lead of 5.50 by km 87, before being brought back into the peloton at the foot of the Jaizkibel. In the World Cup rankings, it is Tchmil from Frank Vandenbroucke, with Dutch rider Michael Boogerd in third place.
