Beat Zberg (Rabobank, stage winner)
"I will give the money to the victims of the attacks. I dedicate this victory to the people killed in New York and Washington. I hope they will be able to find a solution without death and violence."
"My team isn't having the best tour, so it was important to win this for the team's morale."
Zberg collected 3,065 Euro (about US$3,000) for the win, his first since 1998, the year he won the Swiss TT championships.
Richard Virenque (Domo, second stage)
"I cannot yet follow the best riders in the mountains, so I climb at my own rhythm, but today, when the break went there, I thought 'Why not?' I played my card in the finale and that didn't work, but I don't regret it, quite the contrary."
Oscar Sevilla (Kelme, first GC)
"The stage was very hard and I believe that will have after-effects. You don't feel overdrawn straight away, but this fatigue will be paid in the next few days."
According to the UCI, all the anti-doping controls conducted during the first eight days of the race were negative.
The continued participation in the Vuelta of former leader Joseba Beloki was in doubt last night as team staff and doctors continue to try and find a reason for his dramatic loss of form in Tuesday's stage 11. Beloki told reporters "I feel very weak. We have sent samples to see whether I have a virus or something."
ONCE sources announced after the stage that those tests revealed the beginning of a viral infection of the upper respiratory tract, and ONCE Directeur sportif is expected to withdraw Beloki from Saturday's stage 14.
Beloki was leading the Vuelta until Tuesday when he dramatically lost 20 minutes and finished the race in tears, after having been unable to find the strength to stay with the leaders.
Stage 13 - Full results & report
As expected, the trial of Italian doctor Michele Ferrari has been postponed to December 12 after judges deferred yesterday's preliminary hearing, according to a report on the Bloomberg news service.
Ferrari is accused of breaches of Italy's anti-doping laws, as detailed in yesterday's news.
Mapei rider Manuel Beltran will join Team Coast next year, the first term of a two-year contract with the German team. The addition of Beltran makes up a small Spanish enclave within Coast. As well as Fernando Escartin, who has announced he will retire at the end of 2002, the line-up will include Festina directeur sportif Juan Fernandez and David Plaza.
Coast has also recruited Alain Gallopin (who was with the Mercury squad) to work as a team manager alongside Marcel Wust.
The Francaise des Jeux team is close to agreement with a co-sponsor that will allow it to continue a racing program into 2002, according to a release from the team organisation.
FdJ press officer Marie Pilhes said "It looks as though la Française des Jeux is in a position to finalise an agreement with a partner who shares the same ambitions in the sporting world."
Directeur sportif Marc Madiot added," I am confident, but I'm not able to reveal anything more."
The Beltman sisters, Chantal and Ghita, have reached a verbal agreement to ride for the Italian based/Lithuanian registered Acca Due O team next season, despite the less than sparkling time had by their Dutch compatriots Mirjam Melchers and Arenda Grimberg in 2001. Melchers and Grimberg, accompanied by coach Jean-Paul Van Poppel found it impossible to settle in Italy. The Beltman sisters will be building their season around the Giro, the Tour and the European World cup events.
Cross rider Gerben de Knegt has extended his contract with Rabobank by another year. He'll shortly be starting his second cross season with the team, and will ride with the Rabobank amateur squad on the road next year as preparation.
Farm Frites-Hartol will only have nibe women next season. Sharon van Essen, Bertine Spijkerman and Esther van der Helm will ride for the Dutch national team and Yvonne Brunen is retiring.
Hanka Kupfernagel left the team earlier this season.
Swedish rider Martin Rittsel has extended his contract with CSC-Tiscali for one year.
"Martin hasn't had the results we expected for this year [He won the Four days of Dunkirk last year] but it is bad luck and injuries behind it. We believe that he will perform strongly again. He is primarily a part of our stage race program," said team manager Bjarne Riis.
According to Danish news paper BT Rolf Sørensen has turned down an offer from CSC-Tiscali.
"We came with an idea about next season involving race program as well as salary but he seems to have different idea from us,", said sports director Alex Pedersen.
On less official Scandinavian contracts market there are talks about Magnus Bäckstedt leaving Credit Agricole for Team Fakta and Frank Høj is rumoured to have had talks with CSC-Tiscali.
Odder CK in Denmark has plans for a Danish-Swedish division 3 team with six riders from each country. The objective is to be ahead of Glud & Marstarand but behind Team Fakta, according to Odder's chairman Carsten H. Pedersen. The Swedish partner is a FK Tranpen in southern Sweden sponsored by banana brand Dole. That sponsor will not support the new team however. Odder had a third division team some years ago with a couple of Swedish riders.

Swedish Emil Arnell usually rides for the Italian team Italfine-Podenzana and won one of the toughest stages in the Baby Giro this summer and now leads the GP Tell. Here he is accompanied by Team Crescent riders.
Arnell today was in a break with an Italian who he left behind towards the end and had a 21 seconds margin to Ukrainian Yaroslav Popvych who rides for a mixed team with some of the very best East European riders in the Italian espoirs peloton.
The race has some of the worlds finest U23 riders and is an important event in the build up for the World's in Lisbon mid October.
In the Rheinland-Pfalz, Sweden's best performing pro this year, Team Fakta's Marcus Ljungqvist took his fifth victory this season, by winning the third stage.
"Considering the opposition this is my finest victory so far", says the Swedish Champion who has shown good form all season long and now can start preparing for the World's in Lisbon.
With 10 kilometres to go the Swede attacked with two other riders. With only 500 metres left of the race the group was caught but Ljungqvist surprised everyone with an immediate counter attack.
Unfortunately he lost five minutes on the first stage. "A pity, but my goal with this race was a stage win so mission accomplished anyway", says Ljungqvist.
Preparations are in full swing for the largest single-day race in Japan, the Japan Cup on October 28 at the Forest Park Circuit course, Utsunomiya City.
Organised by the Japan Cycling Federation the 151.3km race will involve 80 riders in 16 teams from Japan and overseas.

Thirty-three riders, including reserves, have been named in the GB team for the World Road Championships in Lisbon, Portugal, October 9th to 14th. In the Senior Men's team Mark Lovatt and Stuart Dangerfield have been rewarded for their consistent excellence in domestic racing and will be joining continental pros David Millar, Max Sciandri and Charly Wegelius. The hilly Lisbon course should suit Lovatt, who was unlucky to miss out on last year's event when he contracted flu. In the Women's team, Caroline Alexander has once again been drafted in to bring her climbing skills to the team, whilst the event may mark the international swan-song of Yvonne McGregor. The Under 23 Men's team looks particularly strong with virtually all the riders having shown that they can compete with the best at one time or another during the season. The Junior Men's and Women's teams each have a stand-out rider in Keiran Page and Nicole Cooke. Both are recognised as special talents, but only Nicole has so far converted her talent into world championship medals. As defending champion and newly crowned world Junior Mountain Bike champion she will undoubtedly be heavily marked. However, her two national Senior Women's Road titles suggest that she knows how to look after herself. Page, on the other hand, is overdue a medal at international level. Never more determined than when he has something to prove, don't bet against him producing the goods in Portugal.
Senior Men Road/TT: David Millar, Max Sciandri, Mark Lovatt, Charly Wegelius, Stuart Dangerfield, Reserves: John Tanner, Paul Manning
