Giro announcement on November 17

The parcours for the 2002 Giro d'Italia will be announced on November 17 in Milan. There will be a live transmission from the starting town Groningen in the Netherlands to the press conference in Milan.

World Cup winner Erik Dekker will ride the prologue of the 2002 race live with a camera on his bike. He will do the prologue with a police escort, because they don't want to close the inner part of Groningen to all traffic.

The Giro 2002 starts in the Netherlands and goes via Germany, Belgium, Luxembourg and France to Italy.

Valkenburg may host Tour stage in 2004

The Dutch town of Valkenburg sent a delegation to last week's Tour de France presentation in Paris, seeking to become a candidate to host a stage of the race in the next few years. After a meeting with Tour directory Jean-Marie Leblanc, two of the delegates, Gies Biemans and John Wauben felt confident that Valkenburg would be part of the Tour in 2004.

Previously it has been reported that nearby Liege will probably host the prologue of the 2004 Tour, meaning that Valkenburg is in a perfect position to welcome one of the early stages. The town was last visited by the Tour in 1992, when a stage finished there.

New investigation into doping in French amateurs

A former amateur cyclist and Parisian policeman has been put under investigation for the traffic of illegal drugs, according to AFP news agency. Reims magistrate Odile Madrolle is in charge of the affair involving Phillipe Boyer, from the Champagne-Ardenne region.

The affair started in 1999 when a 37 year old rider became ill after an overdose of amphetamines. The hospital in Reims found that a liquid amphetamine had been taken, and the manufacturer of the product requested that police look into the case to prevent damage to the company's image.

The enquiry revealed that the supplier of the illegal substances was from the Benelux area. Following this in June 2000, seven local amateur riders, aged 20 to 50, were charged by the police. Their names were not released, but it is alleged that they were involved in a drug trafficking ring for amphetamines, corticoids, cocaine and heroin amongst other products.

Phillipe Boyer became the eighth person to be embroiled when he was apprehended in Paris approximately 2 weeks ago.

Lotto-Adecco for 2002

The Lotto-Adecco team is essentially complete for next season, although it is not known yet whether Christophe Sercu's squad will be 24 or 25 riders. The reason being that Dane Tayeb Braikia is yet to decide if he will remain. He does have a contract, but he hasn't raced since his bad fall in the Tour of Murcia this year. If Braikia chooses not to stay, Sercu says that there will be no extra place for an additional rider.

Domo may get sponsorship boost from Qatar

De Standaard reports that Domo-Farm Frites may find a new sponsor for next season from the oil-rich country of Qatar. The team's bike sponsor and Virenque guarantor Eddy Merckx recently returned from the country, saying that there was a "ninety percent chance" that a sponsor would be found from Qatar, however he couldn't reveal a name.

Domo manager Patrick Lefevere will fly to Qatar in November to discuss potential deals. Meanwhile, the team is trying to get a start in the first Tour of Qatar, a five day race which will be organised by the Sociètè du Tour de France.

"15 teams of eight men are planned for the race," said Merckx. "But I heard that there were 18 candidates. Lance Armstrong also feels something for this tour in January."
