Saeco-Longoni Sport 2002

The Saeco-Longoni Sport team will meet for the first time on Monday, December 3 until Thursday, December 6 in Comerio, Varese for the first medical checkups and meetings with the team management. The 23 rider team will have 10 new riders. As well as the two stars Gilberto Simoni and Danilo Di Luca, team manager Claudio Corti has also brought in Spaniard Igor Astarloa, Italian Oscar Mason, Austrian Gerrit Glomser and other Italians such as Cristian Pepoli, Alessandro Spezialetti and Andrea Tonti.

Two young riders will turn professional in 2002 with Saeco Macchine per Caffe-Longoni Sport: 1999 Junior world champion Damiano Cunego and Leonardo Bertagnolli from the Trentino region.

Riders from this year's line-up worth noting include Mirko Celestino and Salvatore Commesso. Celestino won three races this season despite several injuries. Commesso also had a quiet season but is expected to finally mature and show that he has the talent to win important races.

Biagio Conte, who won three races last year when not working for the team in the sprints, will be the team's leading sprinter, while Nicola Gavazzi and Torsten Nitsche are developing their fast finishing talents.

An improvement is also expected from the eclectic Fabio Sacchi, while important team work should come from Alessio Galletti, Germans Joerg Ludewig and Christian Wegmann, Moldovian Igor Pugaci, American Justin Spinelli, Australian Brad Davidson and Lithuanian Marius Sabaliauskas.

Australian rider Cadel Evans will not be part of the Saeco Macchine per Caffe' team in 2002. While riding for the team this year he showed his talent for road racing and had been expected to be part of the 2002 Saeco team. Even though he reached an agreement with team manager Claudio Corti, Evans, has in fact signed a contract with Mapei-Quick Step.

The Saeco Macchine per Caffe'-Longoni Sport team and its consultants are studying the relative documents to verify if any irregularities or incorrect behaviour have taken place. If this is proven to be the case, the team reserve the right to take the necessary action against whoever is responsible.

Other changes have occurred in the team's staff, with the arrival of two new directeur sportifs in Giuseppe Martinelli and Flavio Miozzo. They will join Guido Bontempi and Bruno Vicino.

After he was operated in November 2000, Lampre-Daikin's Marco Pinotti will undergo another surgical operation on Tuesday November 27, in Como, Italy. The strong Italian time trialist broke his ulna one year ago during a charity race, when he fell and Ivan Quaranta accidentally rode his bike over Marco's arm.

In the first operation, a titanium plate and seven screws were inserted in order to set the fracture. He took advantage of this forced rest to present and defend his thesis, and then graduate in Industrial Engineering.

Unfortunately the plate broke some time in November 2000, but surgeons only found out in late December, in a check up. They said that another surgical operation would be necessary and therefore another three month convalescence period.

Since Pinotti had already stopped for two months at that stage, he decided to postpone it after consulting with doctors, and started to train for the 2001 racing season keeping the broken bone and the broken pieces of metal.

Surgeons will today remove the broken plate and replace it with a new one. Hoping that everything will go smoothly, the Lampre-Daikin cyclist has to face at least 2-3 months of inactivity. It also means Pinotti will have more time to reply to his fans, who can email him at marcopino@inwind.it.

CA Mantes-la-Ville 78

French professional women's team CA Mantes-la-Ville 78 will make several changes to its line up for 2002. Gone will be Magali Floc'h, Cybil Digiustini, Sandrine Marcuz and Emanuelle Farcy, with only Elisabeth Chevanne-Brunel and Sandra Wampfler staying from the current roster. New additions include Swiss Marcia Eicher-Vouets, Australian Bridget Evans and Slovakian Zlatica Gavlakova. It's possible that Japan's Miho Oki and one other rider will join them as well, making a total of seven team members.

The team will focus on the Grande Boucle (women's TdF), Tour de l'Aude and the Trophée d'Or in France, the European World Cup races, and a few races in Italy and Spain. The team will have its first training camp in March in Ariège.

Bert Story-Piels team turns pro

The Dutch amateur team Bert Story-Piels will ride next season as a professional squad. The UCI has granted the team Division III status, meaning that it will be allowed to race in races such as the Ster van Zwolle which will be off limits to amateur teams in 2002. Several other Dutch amateur teams are expected to make the transition to the professional ranks because of this new rule.

British Cycling signs sporting racial equality charter

British Cycling signed the Sporting Equals Racial Equality Charter on Saturday November 24 at Manchester's National Cycling Centre. Sporting Equals is a partnership between Sport England and the Commission for Racial Equality, which has been working closely with British Cycling to achieve, maintain and improve the concept of racial equality within the sport at all levels.

Mick Hannah signs for Haro MTB team

Australian Downhill/Dual rider, Mick Hannah (Global Racing), has signed for the Team Haro-Lee Dungarees mountain bike team for 2002. Hannah only recently turned 18, but had an incredible season in 2001, moving from 277th to 25th on the UCI rankings. He won both Downhill and Dual events at the NORBA Big Bear race (still as a junior) and finished in the top 20 in four out of his five World Cup starts, including a podium finish in Grouse Mountain.

"Mick, who just celebrated his eighteenth birthday, has a bright future in Downhill and Dual Slalom," said Haro's president Jim Ford.

Hannah will join Mike King, Seamus McGrath, Chris Sheppard and Kurt Voreis in the team, with his first race being the 2002 Sea Otter Classic in Monterey, California.

2002 American Mountain Bike Challenge

America's largest mountain bike series, the 2002 NORBA American Mountain Bike Challenge (AMBC) will consist of 25 events in 2002, at various locations around the country.

Ten new events will be added to the 2002 AMBC calendar, including the High Point Ranch Roundup in Ada, Oklahoma, organised by Team Crunch. Competitors from Oklahoma, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas, Kansas and Missouri have made the trip in past years to Ada for some serious action at the High Point Ranch Roundup.

The Stump Jump 2002 in Spartanburg, S.C., is another addition to the schedule. Besides offering great off-road action, the race also raises funds for the Rotary Foundation. Most of the money collected supports the Children Shelter, a facility to temporarily house children who are removed from their homes because of abuse or neglect.

There will be two new AMBC races in Colorado in 2002, organised by Colorado's Cycle Cyndicate. The Chile Challenge in Angel Fire, N.M., and Blast the Mass in Snowmass. In addition to downhill, dual slalom, cross-country and trials, organisers are planning for a trail running race for each event.

The DINO Challenge brings AMBC racing back to Indiana after a one-year hiatus. The Challenge is part of Indiana's DINO Mountain Bike Series, which was comprised of eight races in 2001.

Maverick Sports, the group that brought the Firecracker 50 to the AMBC, introduces another race to the 2002 AMBC - The Fall Classic in Breckenridge, Colorado. The three-stage competition includes a cross-country, hill climb and circuit race.

The Gone Riding organisers take AMBC racing to four states in 2001 with four new competitions. The Southeast Regional Championship take place in Helen, Ga., Fontana, N.C., Aniston, Ala, and Ocoee, Tenn. Gone Riding also promotes the Florida State Championship Series.

Created in 1996, the AMBC provides racing opportunities for men, women and children of all ages and abilities. All AMBC events offer cross-country racing, with some events also including downhill, dual slalom and observed trials competitions. NORBA is a member association of USA Cycling, the sport's national governing body.

In addition to the citizen races, AMBC events also host the Junior Olympic Mountain Bike Series and the Shimano Youth Series. The Junior Olympic series offers riders age 10-18 the chance to test their skills against competitors of the same age. The Shimano Youth Series provides kids 12 and under an entry into mountain bike racing. Sometimes assisted by parents, children ages two and up spin their wheels around a course specifically designed for them.

Wayland Cyclo-Cross preview

The Wayland Cyclo-Cross scheduled for Saturday, December 1, forms part of the Verge New England Championship Cyclo-Cross Series. The races will be held at Wayland High School, Wayland, MA, starting at 10 am with the Amateurs, followed by the Elite women at 12 noon and the Elite men at 1:15 pm.

The current series standings are dominated by the Saturn team, with Mark and Frank McCormack and Tim Johnson holding down the top three places. However, New England riders such as JD Bilodeau (NCC/Bikereg.com) and Adam Hodges Myerson (Bikereg.com Cyclo-Cross Team) are gaining form, and should challenge the Saturn boys on Saturday.

In the women's event, the feeling is that if Lyne Bessette (Saturn) shows, the classy Canadian road and time-trial champion is certain to be the front-runner. Until a second-place finish in Chicago last week, Bessette had won every race she had entered in this, her first year of cyclo-cross.

But just as in the men's race, the women's field is coming into form and poised to put Bessette on the defensive. Jodi Groesbeck, who wears the stars and stripes jersey as a masters national champion, has gotten stronger with each race and won the last round in Plymouth after leading start to finish. Katrina Davis and Alicia Genest (Richard Sachs), as well as Kathryn Roszko (BikeReg.com) and Shauna Gilies-Smith (GearWorks) are also ramping things up for a big December push.

U.S. National Champion Jesse Anthony is also likely to remain the undisputed leader in the junior category, although Chris Hill (NCC Bikereg.com) has won his last three races and is ready to take Anthony on.
