Hamburger returns with Alexia Alluminio

Division 2 team, Alexia Alluminio have released their official team list for 2002. Perhaps the most interesting addition to Alexia is Bo Hamburger. Hamburger you may remember was initially suspended by the UCI after returning a positive EPO drug sample. This was then overturned after the Danish courts found that the EPO sample had not been conducted properly.

Hamburger's team CSC-Tiscali faced a dilemma with Hamburger as they could not formally fire him, even though team manager Bjarne Riis said that he was more or less convinced off Hamburger's guilt. Riis made the comment in an interview with TV2.

For further reading on Hamburgers EPO ins and outs see Cyclingnews August 1 news

Other riders on the 25 rider list include Sprinter Ivan Quaranta, winner of the two stages at the Giro 2001, as well as climber Marco Magnani. The team has attempted to increase their strength by adding Paolo Savoldelli (Saeco), Paolo Lanfranchi (Mapei), Paolo Valoti (Alessio), Giuseppe Di Grande (Tacconi Sport) and Alberto Elli (Telekom).

Alexia have also signed five neo pros, Latvian Andriss Reiss and Italians Luca Barattero, Fabiano Ferrari, Damiano Giannini and Sebastiano Scotti.

NORBA adds new rounds for 2002

By Cyclingnews staff

The NORBA National Mountain Bike Championships has added races in Wisconsin's Alpine Valley, and Durango Colorado to make up the five race program for 2002.

The series kicks off in familiar territory, May 16-19 at Snow Summit Resort in Big Bear Lake, California. This will be the 13th time that Snow Summit Resort have hosted a NORBA round.

Next up is one of the new courses, Wisconsin's Alpine Valley Resort on June 13-16. Alpine Valley Resort, is about a 40-minute drive from Milwaukee. Located in southern Wisconsin, Alpine Valley Resort is set against the hills and valleys of the scenic Kettle Moraine.

At the mid-way point, the NORBA Nationals return to the technical and epic courses of Snowshoe, W.Va., June 20-23. Racers first experienced the twisty trails at Snowshoe in 2001. Besides each other, competitors faced heavy rain and mud, making for some of the most interesting racing that season.

From there the series travels to Durango Colorado for the fourth round on August 1-4. Whilst a new stop on this years tour, Durango has previously hosted the event three times (1986-87, 1992). Eleven years ago they brought the sport to the international stage with the first-ever World Mountain Bike Championships. They proved it again in this year with the World Cup race in July, when racers made their way through downtown Durango (as well as some of its shops and a brewery).

Mount Snow, Vermont, has become a finals favorite for the NORBA National Championship Series. August 15-18, 2002 marks the sixth time the "Mountain Bike Capital of the East" will host the season-ending event.

The final round is the largest of them all with the pros taking one more shot for national championship points and the coveted national title. Juniors (ages 10-18) and masters (ages 30-plus) compete in a winner-take-all one-day national championship race.

Two notable venues are absent from the 2002 NORBA Nationals schedule. Deer Valley, Utah, was pulled from the lineup due to scheduling conflicts. Planned capitol improvements at Mammoth Mountain Resort have left the California venue off the 2002 schedule. Race director Bill Cockroft said the bulk of the construction is focused on Canyon Lodge, where the event is normally held.

2002 NORBA National Championship Series Schedule

May 16-19: Snow Summit Mountain Resort, Big Bear Lake, California
June 13-16: Alpine Valley Resort, E. Troy, Wisconsin
June 20-23: Snowshoe Mountain, West .Virginia.
August 1-4: Durango, Colorado.
Aug 15-18: Mount Snow, Vermont

Reader comment

However, in a letter to be published soon on Cyclingnews, reader and former NORBA competitor Tom Arsenault wondered about having only five events on the premier MTB series in the USA, the country that invented mountain biking. An excerpt follows:

"There are only 5 races! Why is this? We, the country who invented the sport, can only support 5 National calendar races?! This is insane! We need more races, and we need more people to step up to the plate to put them on. I would try myself, but, as I said, I'm too disillusioned with the state of mountain bike racing in the US to even want to try. I switched to road this year, and have been better off for it."

This is "coming from a former mountain bike racer who gave up the sport because basically, in the US, NORBA is just no good".

Mountain Cross decision expected soon

Despite the success of the mountain cross there is doubt about it returning for next year. A decision will be made regarding the NORBA Nationals mountain cross (mountain cross has 4 riders on the course at the same time) during the NORBA Board of Trustees meeting Nov. 8.

More on the Melbourne Cup on Wheels

In a follow-up to yesterday's news item on the $15,000 Melbourne Cup on Wheels, event organisers Cyclists International have announced that they will bring a "new angle to promotion of cycle racing in Australia". This new angle will include in-track dining, trick bike riding events and music.

Corporate dining has been introduced to help attract a new market, and involves dining tables being placed on the track infield amidst the action. Sitting on a platform level with the track, diners are treated to a 3-course meal and beverage for the duration of the event, as well as VIP access and parking passes. Corporate patrons also get to meet the nights star cyclists. Corporate dining has become an important part of the cycling at Vodafone Arena, and brings the Six-Day feel to Melbourne.

To gain a better idea of the feel of 6 Day racing, see our Berlin race report

Cyclists International will also be introducing BMX stunt displays, Rock Eistefford performances and live bands to support the competition that will take place on the track.

Another possibility that may be trialled this season is the introduction of a bar on the track infield. Similar to what is currently used at the Six Day races in Europe, this would give patrons the chance to see world class cycling whilst enjoying a drink.

The races themselves will feature such riders as Shane Kelly, Ryan Bayley, Jobie Dajka, Erik Weispfennig, and Sean Eadie.

Event tickets go on sale mid November, and season tickets are available. All tickets are purchased through Ticketek

Tour du Faso update

by Denis Descamps

This 15th edition of the Tour du Faso has been undisputedly dominated by the Dutch Marco Polo Team, which has been possessing the yellow and green jerseys since the first stage and had captured three stages. A good start !

However calling Marco polo a Dutch team is almost a misnomer, as the aim is to race everywhere in the world with riders from exotic countries. Riders come from Uzbekistan, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Indonesia, Columbia, Estonia and Albania. Read more of Denis's diary. Tour du Faso results. Also see the Marco Polo CC diary on Cyclingnews.

Mid-Atlantic Championship Cyclo-Cross Series Calendar

UCI racing returns to the Mid-Atlantic Championship Cyclocross Series calendar when Central Pennsylvania plays host to the toughest weekend in November.

Racing starts off on Saturday at the internationally sanctioned Chameleon Cyclocross in Landisville, Pennsylvania. The race will be held on the grounds of the Hempfield High School and proceeds will benefit Hempfield's basketball program. After a full day of racing, festivities continue in downtown Lancaster when The Chameleon Club hosts a post-race party complete with live music!

As with October's UCI sanctioned Subaru Cross, the Chameleon Cyclocross event is expected to draw the country's top riders in search of valuable international (UCI) points. UCI points play a large role in determining who gets picked to represent the United States at the 2002 World Championships in Zolder, Belgium on February 2-3,2002.

Confirmed starters in the Men's Elite field include current National Champion - Tim Johnson (Saturn), Jonathan Sundt (K2 Bike) and Adam Hodges Myerson (Bikereg.com). Other top riders expected to come in search of points include SuperCup National Series Champion - Marc Gullickson (Mongoose), Alex Candelario (Big Shark/Cannondale) and Todd Wells (Mongoose).

Lining up to challenge them will be the current leader of the 2001 MAC series - Ryan Dewald (Beans Rheinhardt), second placed - Kris Auer (LSV/Trek/VW) and third placed-Bill Elliston (Jaeger Wheelmen). Other notable Mid-Atlantic riders that will line up on race day include Greg Ferguson (Trek VW), Sean Groom (Snow Valley), Szymon Niemotko (Evolution Racing), Ryan Leech (Monkey Hill CS/Aquafina), Jason Moore (Beans Rheinhardt) and Mike Yozell (Guys Bicycles).

The Elite Women's field will include the undefeated Lyne Bessette (Saturn). The 2001 season is Bessette's first racing cyclo-cross but so far the Canadian road racer has proved unstoppable. Anne Grande (Kona/Voicestream), Carmen D'Aluisio (Clif Bar) and Jen Dial (Independent Fabrications) are just a few of the top women hoping to break her streak.

Josie Shew (First State Velo) will wear the MAC leader's jersey on Saturday. Other Mid-Atlantic riders expected include Thais DaSilva (Wissahickon), Katie Compton (Wooden Wheels), Jessica Peil (Snow Valley) and Kelly Yoder (TalgoAmerica.com).

On Sunday, the action moves to the Lions Club Park in Marysville, Pennsylvania. The Sutliff Saturn Rockville Bridge Cyclocross Classic is always one of the best-attended races in the Mid-Atlantic series. Besides the great course and spectator-friendly environment, there is also the added excitement of the team competition. Mike Kuhn, promoter of the Rockville Classic threw in an extra twist last year when he announced a team competition within the Elite Men's and Women's fields. Each rider on a team was awarded points for his or her finish (1st place = 1 point, 10 place - 10 points). The lowest team score won and the top three teams in both Elite fields walked away with cash prizes. This was such a hit with the riders last year that the team competition has been expanded for 2001 to include the Men's B and Men's Masters fields.

Racing starts at Chameleon Cyclocross on Saturday, November 10, 2001 at 9:30am. The Elite Women's race starts at noon and the Elite Men start at 1pm.

On Sunday, November 11, 2001, The Sutliff Saturn Rockville Bridge Cyclocross Classic gets under way at 10am. Elite Women start at 1pm and the Elite Men's race follows at 2:30pm.

The MAC series includes events in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, Delaware and Virginia.

Yeti under new ownership, again

A Yeti management team led by Yeti general manager Chris Conroy has bought the bike company for an undisclosed sum. A number of private investors have backed the deal. Yeti has seen a number of new owners over the years with John Parker, Schwinn, and Volante all having a go in recent times.

"We're all excited about this deal. There's been a lot of speculation over the fate of Yeti since Volant was sold but we're glad to put that to rest and move forward" said Chris Conroy.

Though officials have declined to give the purchase price at this time, Conroy said the company still has significant working capital for the next few years.

The Pearl Izumi-Yeti riders are unlikely to be affected by this, as star rider Paul Rowney told Cyclingnews that "The Pearl Izumi-Yeti team will be back as the best looking team in the paddock to contest NORBA and World Cup events. Lke any team we are tying up loose ends and finalising the roster."

South African cyclist of the year

Votes are currently being taken on line at www.supercycling.co.za for the 2001 South African Cyclist of the Year Award, a major TV event to be awarded on November 19. Votes are being tallied for 11 South African cyclists, and at present the votes are dead even for the lead between Mountain Biker Greg Minnaar and professional road cyclist Robbie Hunter.
