One of Lance Armstrong's stalwart domestiques for the last 7 years, Tyler Hamilton, will sign a two year contract to ride with Danish team CSC-Tiscali, starting in 2002. The announcement was made prior to the start of the 19th stage of the Tour de France in Orleans today.
Cyclingnews spoke with the former Tour of Denmark and Dauphine Libére winner about the move: "Yeah, I'm changing teams," he said. "The Postal Service is still a great team, but I've been there seven years now, and it's probably time for a change of pace."
In the team's press release, Lance Armstrong commented that "I am surely sorry to see my friend and teammate, Tyler Hamilton, leave US Postal but I sincerely wish him the best. He has handled this transfer with class. He departs our team but not our family."
Hamilton's new team manager will be former Tour winner Bjarne Riis, who took over the Danish Memorycard-Jack & Jones team last year, finding two new sponsors and a bigger budget to ensure success this year. The Tour de France has been particularly good for CSC, who are also sponsors of the race. Laurent Jalabert has won two stages, the mountains jersey, and the most combative jersey, while Danish champion Jakob Piil also finished second in a stage.
"Tyler Hamilton is a rider with great potential, which he has shown at US Postal," said Riis. "Besides being a fantastic rider, Hamilton is also a team player and will fit in well with our team. We will count on Tyler and I look forward to our co-operation."
Domo-Farm Frites leader Patrick Lefevere can't wait to get new signing Richard Virenque with a race number on his back again, and has asked the UCI to slightly reduce his suspension so that he can race in Domo colours during the Tour of Denmark, which starts on August 14. Virenque is permitted to race again on August 15, but Lefevere wants this put forwards.
"The Tour of Denmark begins on August 14 at 1 pm. We hope that the UCI will lift the suspension 11 hours sooner than planned."
Should the suspension be kept up, Virenque will instead ride two criteriums on August 15 and 17 in France.
Swiss rider Sven Montgomery (La Française des Jeux) who was seriously injured during the Tour de France, has been flown to Bern (Switzerland) to l'Hôpital de l'Ile for further treatment. Montgomery suffered five fractures to his face after a high speed crash on a descent towards the end of the 17th stage of the Tour, and withdrew along with four other riders as a result.
The Francaise des Jeux team doctor, Dr. Gerard Guillaume, had told France 2 TV that Montgomery will be out for at least 6 to 8 weeks, but may be able to ride at the end of the season.
French champion Didier Rous (Bonjour) will not be riding in the World Championships in Portugal in October, after being snubbed selection last year. "They did not want me last year, they will not have me this year," said Rous, who will go hunting instead, his other favourite pastime.
Swiss rider Stefan Rütimann (Tacconi Sport-Vini Caldirola) has been suspended for 7 months by his federation after testing positive to Nandrolone in the Rund um den Henninger Turm on May 1. He has 30 days to appeal his penalty to the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne
The case of another Swiss rider, Roland Meier (Team Coast), who tested positive for EPO after La Fleche Wallonne, will be heard at the end of August.
The Swiss federation have also requested the dossier pertaining to Swiss riders from the Italian Olympic Committee, based on the raids carried out during the recent women's Giro d'Italia.
