Dario Frigo to front the disciplinary commission

The Italian Olympic committee's (CONI) anti-doping commission have requested that ex-Fassa Bortolo cyclist Dario Frigo present himself in front of the disciplinary commission of the Italian Cycling Federation which will recommend a six month suspension for him. Frigo was found to be (and admitted) in possession of illegal doping products during the police raids on the Giro d'Italia six weeks ago.

After 300 products were seized during the raids on June 6, Florentine public prosecutor Luigi Bocciolini opened an investigation into 86 people associated with the race, mostly cyclists, suspected of violating the Italian anti-doping law.

Frigo, who was lying in second overall during the race, was sacked by his team after the products were found in his possession. He was then questioned by anti-narcotics police a few days later.

Alessio interested in Van Petegem

Top Italian second division team Alessio is interested in Mercury's Peter van Petegem. Despite signing for two years with Mercury, he may be able to break his contract and ride for Alessio next season, according to director sportif Bruno Cenghialta.

"It appears that the Mercury team is folding," said Cenghialta to Het Volk/Het Nieuwsblad today. "I gave orders straight away to try and secure a contract with Peter van Petegem."

He says that if an agreement can be reached between the relevant parties, Van Petegem will ride for them next season. However, Mercury director John Wordin has repeatedly assured Cyclingnews that the team isn't folding, but the existence of the team does not mean that Van Petegem will be riding for them.

It would open the door for Van Petegem to ride in any of the major Tours (if he wants), as Alessio will have an automatic start permit in those after they won the team GC in the Giro d'Italia. The Mercury team was scheduled to ride in the Vuelta España in September, but organisers Unipublic said that they would not be at the start. Alessio have been offered a wildcard entry instead.

Amy Jarvis back in six months

Amy Jarvis (Equipe RONA) should be able to resume her training in about six months, after her injuries are completely healed and after extensive physiotherapy, according to a press release from her team. She was injured during the Canadian national time trial championships on Wednesday, after being hit by a truck crossing the road as she was speeding along Champlain Boulevard, the busiest street in Dieppe, where this year's championships are being held.

She is being treated at the Georges-L.-Dumont regional hospital, near the University of Moncton and has recovered from the shock of the accident, but she remembers almost nothing of the events that occurred on Wednesday.

Dr. Alban Haché, an orthopedic surgeon at Georges-Dumont hospital, operated on Jarvis last night to repair her left quadriceps, which was deeply lacerated in the accident. She should be released from the hospital in a few days. She will have to wear a cast for the next six weeks and after that she will be allowed to start reconditioning her muscles.

"The doctor said that I won't be able to begin training hard for at least six months," she lamented. This is especially unfortunate since Amy has had an extremely productive season with Team RONA, making impressive strides in her performance.

Amy is trying to look at the bright side: at least she'll be out of the cast in time for her wedding, which is to take place in September.

Olga Yegorova: First non-cyclist to test positive to EPO

A Russian female middle-distance runner has become the first non-cyclist to test positive for erythropoietin, according to French athletic officials. Olga Yegorova is the current the 3,000 m indoor world champion, and was racing in Paris in a July 6 Golden League competition. She had run the fastest 3,000 m time of the year (8.23,75) and had beaten everyone in the meet.

She faces a two year ban from the IAAF in confirmed positive, although the test wasn't administered by the IAAF. The test, similar to the blood/urine test being used in cycling now, was conducted by French sports officials, however the IAAF does plan to introduce the EPO test to the World Athletics Championships in Edmonton, Canada (August 3-12).
