UCI president Hein Verbruggen was a guest in Tour director Jean-Marie Leblanc's car during stage 13, when Lance Armstrong won the stage to Pla d'Adet and the yellow jersey. It was Verbruggen's only day on the Tour (he couldn't have picked a better one), and although he expressed admiration for Armstrong's ability, he also wanted him to treat the early season classics more seriously.
"I spoke with Lance for a long time during the Tour de Suisse," said Leblanc to Belga newsagency. "I asked that he begin his season a little earlier. A race such as Liege-Bastogne-Liege is made for someone like him."
Armstrong's main attempt at racing in the early season classics has been in the Amstel Gold Race, where he has twice finished second.
Alain Gallopin, the director sportif of Mercury has confirmed to Belgian TV1 that his team is in financial problems. After the withdrawal of co-sponsor Viatel, the team has drastically reduced its program, withdrawing from several programmed races.
"It seems as though we will not make it to the end of the season," said Gallopin.
The Lampre-Daikin team has decided to suspend Frank Vandenbroucke, who has been MIA for several weeks now. Pietro Algeri made this decision after meetings to discuss the situation with VDB failed to amount to anything. He sent the rider a fax telling him of his suspension, and has not received a response.
The directors of the Lampre team hope that this will prompt Vandenbroucke make contact with them, but if this silence continues, then they will terminate his contract and possibly ask him for damages.
