Jan Boven (29) and Addy Engels (24) have signed again with Rabobank for the next two years. Although neither are riding the Tour at the moment, team director Jan Raas commented that "Our team leaders have attached a lot of worth to Boven and Engels."
Lance and Kristin Armstrong will be the proud parents of twin baby girls this December, announcing the results of the doctors assessment today in Perpignan. They already have a son, Luke David, who was born on October 12, 1999. Yesterday after winning the time trial, Lance said that he had an envelope with the sexes of the twins in it, which he opened later that night.
Current Maillot Jaune in the Tour de France, Francois Simon (Bonjour) will not necessarily remain with that team next year. His director, Jean-Rene Bernaudeau, said that he will "make him an offer. But, I can only give what I have."
Simon has considerably raised Bonjour's profile during the Tour when he took the coveted jersey after l'Alpe d'Huez.
Bernaudeau's priority is to find a lead out man for Damien Nazon, the team's sprinter, so Simon might have to be sacrificed. He said that he will not regret the decision.
After the decision by a French court in Rheims yesterday to sentence former TVM boss Cees Priem to 18 months jail with deferrment plus a US$10,500 fine, it seems that he is no longer welcome in cycling circles. Joop Atsma, chairman of the KNWU (Dutch cycling federation), told Radio 1 this morning exactly that, as far as Dutch cycling is concerned.
This process against Cees Priem, his team doctor Andrei Mikhailov and soigneur Jan Moors, began in 1998 when 104 ampoules of EPO were found in Dr Mikhailov's car after a French customs search. An investigation was started, and led to a much publicised search during the 1998 Tour de France, resulting in the departure of the entire TVM team towards the end of the race, together with all the Spanish squads.
Finally a decision was given in the case two days ago, with penalties ranging from 6-18 months suspended sentences, and fines from US$1300-10,500.
Priem's lawyer, Joost van Mierlo said that the penalties were "unacceptably high", also calling them "out of proportion".
In the meantime, Priem has supposedly temporarily suspended his cycling dealings in order to fight against his sentence. "Now you have another punishment. But I am positive that I will have revenge in the sport," he said.
