The patron of the Mercatone Uno supermarket chain, Romano Cenni, has declared that his company will remain with Pantani next year, but will reorganise its responsibilities. It will continue to be the team's head sponsor, but will not play a role in the organisation or direction of the team. Felice Gimondi (team president) will finish his contract at the end of this year.
The current team's bike sponsor Bianchi will only be involved with Pantani next season, and perhaps individual riders, as they wish to support other teams in 2002.
As for Pantani, he will likely re-enter competition on August 1, after a break during the Tour de France. His next big goal is the Vuelta España in September.
With the transfer carousel gearing up during this month, there are reports from Italy that Mapei's Michele Bartoli will leave the team, possibly joining Lampre, Alexia, iBanesto or Gerolsteiner.
It is certain that Italians Alberto Elli, Giovanni Lombardi and Roberto Sgambelluri will leave Telekom at the end of this year, and possibly Guisseppi Guerini as well. Where they are going is uncertain, but Pavel Tonkov (Mercury) is reported to be in contact with the top German squad.
Paul van Hyfte (Lotto-Adecco) will join Bjarne Riis' CSC(-Tiscali?) team next season, due to sign a 1 year contract with them soon.
Austrian Christian Pfannberger has signed a two year contract with the German Nürnberger team, starting next season. The young, talented rider is currently with Union Elk-Haus, and has had some success in winning the 1999 World Military Championships, as well as the U23 Thüringen-Rundfahrt this year. He joins his compatriots Harald Morscher and Werner Riebenbauer in Nürnberger.
"I am already looking forward to the time with Nürnberger. The step up to the professional ranks represents an absolute challenge for me. In this team I have the possibility of adjusting myself to the hard everyday life of a professional," said Pfannberger.
ONCE's German signing for this season, Jörg Jaksche, has criticised his former team Deutsche Telekom, where he rode for two years. Jaksche was, and still is, a promising young rider, but told German magazine Sport Bild that there was a lack of support in Telekom for up and coming riders like himself.
"It is very cold there," he said. "Only work counts. To exist at all in this team you must be very experienced and already 28-29 years old."
Jaksche did say that he had learned tactics, and a solid work ethic, but in ONCE "there is more of a family atmosphere" as many others have said before him.
"There you can go with more enthusiasm and better morale to race. The team harmony is very good."
Jaksche believes that his former captain Ullrich is stronger than Beloki, who is a "mountain specialist" who "doesn't have the power for the flat time trials."
As the Lehigh Valley Velodrome prepares to host over 30 international cycling teams at the Junior Track World Cycling Championships presented by Service Electric, unknown faces will emerge into the spotlight. The United States team has a number of possible new stars as it prepares to take on the world.
A potential US medal contender is Christian Stahl, 18, of Bethany, Conn. Stahl won four medals at the 2000 EDS Junior National Cycling Championships despite having only ridden "about 15 times" on the track in his brief career before that event, he said.
In the year since that performance, Stahl has rapidly improved, earning a chance to ride for the US at a World Track Cup event earlier this year in Colombia.
"He's just so motivated," said Des Dickie, national sprint coach. Dickie said that Stahl's times in the 200 meter time trial - used for seeding in match sprint tournaments - has dropped from 12.6 seconds to 10.9 seconds in a year.
"If you get the right training plan, anything can happen," said Stahl, who will compete in the match sprint, Olympic sprint and kilometer time trial during the Junior Track World Cycling Championships.
"It will be awesome," he said. "All my friends and neighbors are coming. It will be the first time my mom gets to see me race on the track. Representing the US, I want to do the best I can. I'm hoping for a medal in the kilo(meter time trial)."
Stahl is one of nine US team members who will be competing in a Junior World Championship for the first time. Others to watch include Tyler Farrar, 17, of Wenatchee, Wash., a four-time junior national champion who posted the best time in the 3km individual pursuit at the US Team Trials last month; and Blake Caldwell, 17, of Boulder, Colo., who owns eight junior national titles.
