Saeco's Mario Cipollini has said that he "hasn't signed anything" in relation to the recent strong rumours that he will ride for Cantina Tollo next season. During today's Tour de France stage, SuperMario was contacted by RAI TV on the telephone, but refused to confirm a team change.
"I have not signed with anybody, not even with Cantina Tollo," he said. "I do not hide that there are negotiations in progress, but for now I have not taken a decision and therefore I have not signed any contract."
Cipollini wasn't too enthusiastic about the Tour de France, in which he has won 12 stages and worn the yellow jersey. "I don't know anything, I do not follow it, I don't read cycling articles and when I see a program on the Tour on TV, I change channels. I only know what happens by what others tell me."
On his re-entry to competition: "I am training at the moment, I'm always on the bike, I will come back in August.
However, according to other sources, Mario will sign next Thursday for two years with Cantina Tollo, and Ivan Quaranta (Alexia) will take his place.
Italian sprinter/lead-out man, Giovanni Lombardi, will leave Deutsche Telekom at the end of the season. Lombardi, who was not selected in Telekom's Tour de France team, will ride with Mario Cipollini next year.
"We have not yet spoken with Lombardi, but I can imagine that he is leaving," said Telekom's Walter Godefroot in Colmar today. "For him it's not important to stay. Lombardi is, after Zabel, Hondo, and Fagnini, our fourth sprinter."
Godefroot confirmed that Telekom is interested in German rouleur Jens Voigt, who spent a day in yellow today before losing it to teammate O'Grady. "We worked well with him in the Olympic Games in Sydney," added Godefroot. "But he hasn't given us a sign that he wants to go to Telekom."
Voigt says that he will decide about his future in August, as his contract with Crédit Agricole runs out at the end of this season. It is important for him to remain in Germany, although he is interested in joining Lance Armstrong's US Postal team.
Two teams that took part in the Giro d'Italia Femminile, that finished today in Valdobbiadene, have said that they are unconcerned about the results of police raids that happened after stage 9. The German Equipe Nürnberger and the Australian National Team were subject to the raids, which have resulted in 42 people being placed under investigation.
In the case of Nürnberger, despite a thorough search of the team's rooms and vehicles, no medical products considered out of the ordinary were found by the Italian police. In addition, no UCI controls on Nürnberger riders have given abnormal results. The hematocrit limit for female riders is 48 percent, as set by the UCI.
"In our team, there are no forbidden pills," said Nürnberger director Silvia Knoll. "The written confirmations from the Italian authorities clearly exempt us from any suspicion."
The Australian team led by James Victor, stated that "The NAS found vitamin C and B12, zinc and sodium bicarbonate" in the raids on July 11. In addition, he expressed his support and his team's availability for the anti-drug controls.
Martin Barras is the successor to Charlie Walsh in the Australian Institute of Sport's track cycling program. The 39 year old has spent time in both Great Britain and Australia in coaching roles, and his experience will be welcomed by the squad.
According to an official CA statement, Barras has "worked with the British national team since he left Australia in February 2000 developing, managing and implementing their successful campaign at last year’s Sydney Olympic Games, will be based in Adelaide on his return to Australia.
He has coached a number of Great Britain riders to Olympic, World Championship and World Cup gold medals. The former Australian Junior Men’s Road team coach is highly regarded on the international cycling scene and is no stranger to the elite training program’s here in Australia.
Prior to moving to Great Britain Barras spent five years as head coach of the Western Australian Institute of Sport Cycling Program, which provided him with extensive knowledge and understanding of Australian cycling and its elite programs."
