"Hang on, we've forgotten someone - Marco Pantani!"
You can almost hear the powers that be exclaiming this as they reviewed the list of riders and team staff to be questioned in relation to the Giro d'Italia raids that took place in San Remo last June. Pantani's name was not on the fairly long list until very recently, and the announcement surprised his lawyer Federico Cecconi, who said that "No substance was found on Pantani in the Sanremo 'blitz'. The report of the products seized was completely negative."
Nevertheless the prosecutor in Florence, Luigi Bocciolini, wants to question Pantani sometime in January, when he resumes his investigation into the whole affair.
Pantani is at the moment in Liguria, and will spend New Year's Day in Cesenatico before leaving for Spain to further prepare for 2002. After a poor season in 2001, he and his Mercatone Uno team will be looking for a big improvement in 2002.
The Tour of South China Sea is the last stage race of the year with UCI points, taking place from December 25-31 in Hong Kong, China and Macao. Asian Champion Kam Po Wong has completely dominated the first four stages of this tour, and still leads after stage 6 with just one stage to go.
In the first stage, an individual time trial, last year's tour winner South African Neil MacDonald took the lead. He beat Wong by two seconds. The following three stages saw Kam Po Wong torture the rest of the pack. He won the second and the third stage in mass sprints. In the fourth stage he chased down a serious leading group, attacked several times himself and finally won the mass sprint again.
The fifth stage was won by the German Rene Obst (Team Berlin), who triumphed in a 12 man sprint over Masahiko Mifune (CMS Marco Polo). Mifune was second again in stage 6, being beaten this time by China's Wang Guozhang (Chinese National B Team). In the overall classification, Kam Po Wong still leads by 18 seconds in front of Neil MacDonald.
The stages held in China were watched by thousands people, demonstrating that the sport of cycling is becoming popular in this part of the world and has many opportunities.

30 year old Belgian cyclist Marc Streel (Collstrop-Palmans) has retired from professional cycling. Streel turned pro in 1994 with Collstrop, but then changed to Tönissteiner (1995-1996), Casino (1997-1998) and Home Jack & Jones (1999). At the end of 1999, he returned a high hematocrit value before the Grand Prix Des Nations, and was subsequently sacked from Home Jack & Jones. He rode for Ville de Charleroi and then Collstrop in 2000, and stayed with Collstrop for 2001.
Streel's best season was in 1998 when he won seven races, including the Tour of Denmark overall plus two stages.
Danish Team fakta has completed its 15 rider lineup for 2002, with the signing of CSC-Tiscali's Renë Joergensen. 23 year old Joergensen, who signed a contract for 1 year, is seen as a rider with big potential in Danish cycling. He will make his 2002 debut in the Tour de Langkawi (February 1-10) along with Morten Sonne, Lennie Kristensen, Jørgen Bo Petersen, Allan Bo Andresen, Lars Bak and the Norwegian Bjørnar Vestøl. Team fakta will also be racing in the inaugural Tour of Qatar (January 21-25), where it hopes to make a positive start to the season.
In 2002, Team fakta will race in the second division. However the team is looking to sign a couple of important sponsors for the next couple of years, that will help it in its bid to make division I.
The team will once again be led by Australian Scott Sunderland, who is the team's highest ranked rider (66th on the UCI scale) after a very consistent season in 2001. Another important rider will be Dane Jørgen Bo Petersen, winner of the Tour of Luxembourg in 2001. The remainder of the team is well balanced, including sprinters Roberto Lochowski, Kurt Asle Arvesen and Bjørnar Vestöl, and newly hired domestique Magnus Backstedt.

Team SBS/B&L is preparing for its second season of master's road racing in California and the West, by adding nine juniors to its 40 rider roster. Last year, the team won 41 events and was led by multiple race winners John Rubcic, Mike Mueller, Mark Huffman, Lynn Albrow and Robert Ramirez. Huffman also won the California state time trial championship.
The team is expanding with additional sponsors and a new junior program with four girls and five boys ages 13-18. Among them is Ricardo Cruz, who won all three events at the USCF junior national championships in 2001.
