Police officers from the Italian anti-narcotics brigade (NSA) in Florence have issued summonses to 36 riders and staff, as part of the investigation into the 2001 Giro d'Italia. The investigation stems from a massive raid by the NAS on June 6 in San Remo, where all team hotels were searched for banned performance enhancing substances. 160 products were seized and analysed, the results showing that there was some growth hormone and insulin found, but no erythropoetin (EPO).
The biggest news immediately after the raids was that Dario Frigo was found in possession of banned substances, and was forced out of the race and subsequently sacked by his Fassa Bortolo team. The Giro finished with Gilberto Simoni becoming the overall champion.
An initial list of riders and staff numbering approximately 86 people under suspicion was released by the police. It emerged that Simoni was not one of the people on this list, and neither were high profile riders Marco Pantani and Mario Cipollini. Top German rider Jan Ullrich was one of the names on the list, but he claims that the drugs (corticosteroids) found in his possession were for his asthma, and were quite legal according to UCI rules.
Starting in January, several dozen riders and staff from Italian and foreign teams will have to answer questions in front of Judge Luigi Bocciolini in Florence. The list includes the following:
Dario Andriotto, Ermanno Brignoli, Matteo Carrara, Daniele De Paoli, Giuseppe Di Grande, Alberto Elli, Giuliano Figueras, Paolo Lanfranchi, Giovanni Lombardi, Marco Magnani, Renzo Mazzoleni, Gabriele Missaglia, Giampaolo Mondini, Rinaldo Nocentini, Andrea Peron, Mariano Piccoli, Domenico Romano, Marcello Siboni, Antonio Varriale, Marco Velo, Marco Villa and Stefano Zanini.
Jose Luis Arrieta, Vincente Belda, Francesco Josè Fernandez, Jolanda Fuentes Rodriguez, Zurbano Galilea, Jesus Hojos, Izana Varte, David Latasa Lasa, Pablo Garcia Lastras, David Navas, Jon Odriozola, Unai Osa, Cesar Solaun and Juan Sunol.
Italian Paolo Lanfranchi, winner of the 2001 Tour de Langkawi, will defend his title in the Malaysian race from February 1 to 10, 2002. 32 year old Lanfranchi has been a professional since 1993, however the Tour de Langkawi has been a high point in his career, after winning both the 1999 and 2001 editions.
He laid the foundations for final victory in 2001 by winning consecutive stages. Lanfranchi was first at Tanah Rata at the end of stage 8, and confirmed his superiority by winning the decisive ninth stage, which finished at the summit of Genting Highlands. In addition to taking the yellow jersey of individual winner in 2001, Lanfranchi also won the Mountains competition and led Mapei-Quickstep to the team prize.
His good form earned him selection for the Italian national team in the World Road Race Championship for the first time. Lanfranchi placed 12th in the road race in Lisbon, Portugal, although this was not without controversy as he was accused of chasing down an Italian teammate (Gilberto Simoni) in the closing stages of the race.
Following an end of season transfer to the Alexia team, Lanfranchi returns to Malaysia to lead a powerful lineup, comprising Marco Battiston, Alberto Elli, Daniele Galli, Antonio Salomone, Eddy Serri and Andriss Reiss.
Alberto Elli is the other star of the Alexia lineup. He is one of the most experienced professionals currently riding, and he is about to embark on his 15th season. He is a stage race specialist, having worn the yellow jersey in the Tour de France and winning the Tour of Luxembourg, the South African Boland Tour, the French Midi Libre race and the Spanish Tour of Murcia.
Italian fashion designer Roberto Cavalli's clothes are normally worn by the likes of supermodel Gisele Bundchen. However his latest creation will feature on the body of cycling glamour boy, Mario Cipollini.
34 year old Cipollini will next year ride for the Acqua e Sapone team, managed by Vincenzo Santoni. As followers of his time in Saeco will realise, Mario Cipollini is worth more than an impressive sprint win (or four) in a major stage race. Love him or adore him, he is undeniably one of cycling's biggest and most popular "personalities".
"Cipollini is unique, so he is ideal for our one-of-a-kind shirt," said Santoni in an interview with Darren Tulett, Bloomberg News. "Cavalli loves cycling and Mario loves the fashion world - it's a natural fit."
Cavalli used red, black and white as the dominant colours for a uniform which will incorporate "innovative" fabrics, according to Santoni.
The new outfit will be seen on January 8 at a team presentation in a Milan night club. Cipollini hopes to wear it to yet another stage win in the Giro d'Italia, where he was won an incredible 38 stages. The 2002 Giro starts on May 11 and finishes on June 2.
Earlier this year, mountain bike racer Cadel Evans told his fans he had no plans to switch to the road. But a few weeks ago he signed for Mapei. Karen Forman found out why.

33 year old Wim de Vos has extended his contract with the Belgian SpaarSelect team. The Dutchman signed for another two years with the specialist cyclo-cross team, and he then intends to retire.

The last MAC race of the season will see the crowning of Champions and one happy team which will walk away with the MAC Cup. Team Harrisburg has secured Shank Park as the venue, which is located within minutes of popular attractions such as Chocolate World, Candylane and the Hershey shopping outlets. There will be plenty of festivities to enjoy after the racing finishes.
Fresh off his strong sixth place finish in the Espoirs' race at Nationals, Ryan Dewald (Beans Rheinhardt) will be trying to hang onto his position as the current points leader in the Elite men's field. Bill Elliston (Jaeger Wheelmen) is only 26 points behind Dewald and is still in position to potentially repeat as the MAC Champ. Kris Auer (LSV/Trek/VW) and Greg Ferguson (Trek VW) who both had great rides at Nationals are sitting in third and fourth spots.
Josie Shew (First State Velo Sport) and Thais DaSilva (Wissahickon) continue their duel into this last race. Shew currently leads the series and looks to be the favorite for the title but anything can happen in 'cross and DaSilva is riding high after her second place finish in the Junior class at Nationals. Right behind them in third sits Katie Compton (Wooden Wheels). Compton has not raced the entire series but when she shows up, look out. Compton could jump over DaSilva but Shew would still be out of reach.
The promoters have thrown extra prizes into the pot for the Elite Women's race and rumors abound that the payout may go fifteen deep.
MAC favorite and Supercup winner, Gunnar Shogren (Allegheny Cycling Association) leads the Masters 35+ field. Richard Mihills (First State Velo Sport) and Eric Schlauch (Somerset Wheelmen) hold second and third positions. In the Masters 45+ field, Randall Root (Snow Valley) sits on top. Kevin Breckenmaker (Team Harrisburg) and Bernie Klees (Evolution Racing) are engaged in a close battle for second.
Adam Beattie (First State Velo Sport) has a lock on the Junior title. Second and third place will be determined by an inter-squad battle between Wooden Wheels teammates Joey Thompson and Ethan Townsend. They are separated by five points heading into this last race.
First State Velo Sport has already wrapped up the team competition and will take home the coveted MAC cup. However it all comes down to this race for Wooden Wheels and Evolution Racing. The two teams are dead even, tied for second, heading into this last race. Both want that second place finish.
Racing starts on Sunday, December 30, 2001 at 10:00am. The Elite Women's race starts at 1:30pm and the Elite Men's race follows at 2:30pm. For more information go to www.monkeyhillcs.com/mac.
