Two Belgian teams in Wortegem-Petegem World Cup

This Sunday's round 3 of the Cyclo-cross World Cup will be held in Wortegem-Petegem, Belgium. The Belgian national coach Eric De Vlaeminck has decided to enter two teams into the event. The A team consists of World Cup leader Sven Nijs, Bart Wellens, Mario De Clercq, Tom Vannoppen and Erwin Vervecken. The second selection is Ben Berden, Arne Daelmans, Bjorn Rondelez, Peter Van Santvliet and Sven Vanthourenhout. The 10 Belgians are looking to build on their success this season with a big performance on Sunday.

2001 Fielders Australian Cyclist of the Year Awards

The finalists in the Cycling Australia 2001 Fielders Australian Cyclist of the Year Awards have been officially named. The winners will announced on Friday December 14 at a ceremony in West Adelaide, South Australia, culminating in the naming of the 2001 Australian Cyclist of the Year, who will receive the Sir Hubert Opperman Medal.

According to the release, "Those nominated for awards have posted outstanding performances in world and national competition in track, road, MTB, Paralympic, Masters and BMX."

"The list includes world and national champions, world cup victors and major race winners, all of whom have secured a major place for cycling in Australia's overall sporting success," said Mike Victor, President of Cycling Australia.

The judging criteria includes:

1 Performance at principal world events
2 Performance at other major international events
3 Performance at premier domestic level
4 Consistency of Performances
5 Ambassadorship for the sport of cycling

It also seems that UCI ranking did not greatly influence the selection of the three finalists in each category.

Manuel Beltrán aiming for the Giro and the Vuelta

One of Team Coast's new signings, Manuel Beltrán (30), will be in his eighth year as a professional in 2002. The lightly built Spaniard is hoping to ride both the Giro d'Italia and the Vuelta a España "if all goes well".

"The Vuelta a España is a very important race on the calendar and in the year 2002 it will travel over Jiennense ground," said Beltran, who is Jiennense. "My goal is to obtain a good result on the alto de la Pandera, a climb that I know very well."

"I know many of my new teammates and they are riders with experience and great quality. The signing of Angel Casero is important, because don't forget that he is the last winner of the Vuelta a España."

Beltran also did not rule out participation of Team Coast in next year's Tour de France, which will come down to a wild card draw. It's unlikely, due to the number of French teams waiting in the wings for the remaining places.

Bart Bowen finds new role at cyclo-cross races

Recovering nicely from his early-season accident, a cane-assisted Bart Bowen, former Supercup and USPro Champion, made a celebrity appearance at Sunday's New Mexico State Cyclocross Championships. While he was unable to race, Bowen assumed an unusual role as spectator. Not satisfied with merely standing by, Bad Bart took over the announcing duties for the showcase event of the day, the A-race.

The golden baritone of his Richard Fries-esque: "Stephen Knight-Williamson has a gap! Stephen Knight-Williamson has a gap!" is reportedly still echoing through second place-getter Alex Andel's head. Fries is known as an announcer for the Supercup series.

A new career for Bart Bowen?

South African Cycling takes another step towards unification

Three of the major stakeholders, the Pedal Power Associations of Western Province, Central and Northern Gauteng announced in Cape Town that they will be joining the South African Cycling Federation in mediated talks, early in the new year. It is their joint aim to establish an umbrella body to represent all aspects of cycling and that would seek official recognition by the South African Government and the World Controlling Body for Cycling, the UCI.

These three Pedal Power bodies who together represent the overwhelming majority of organised cyclists throughout South Africa also announced their intention to form the South African Pedal Power Federation and to invite the smaller Pedal Power bodies throughout the country to join them.

A spokesperson for Pedal Power stated that this was a very exciting step indeed. Even after Unification, the Pedal Power Associations around the country will continue to run recreational cycling and it is vital that "we speak with one voice" where we can.
