The UCI have released its official qualification list for the Men's World Road Race Championships in Lisbon on October 14. Rankings were calculated from August 15, meaning that Portugal lost its 20th spot to Ukraine, after Portuguese riders failed to perform as well as they did last year in their national tour. This means they are allowed only four riders in the road race rather than eight.
The UCI also notes that Lithuania is allowed an extra spot due to having the outgoing World Champion Romans Vainsteins. They should be prepared for a barrage of Latvian email saying "please correct", as Vainsteins is from that country.

Danish Champion Jakob Storm Piil (CSC-Tiscali) will not participate in the World Championships. After a hard season he wants to slow down already in September, according to web site cyclingworld.dk. Piil is right now one of the dominating riders in the Post Danmark Rundt with a fifth place so far.
31 year old Jørgen Bo Petersen will probably prolong his contract with second division Team Fakta. "It's as good as certain that I will stay by Fakta. The discussion is about whether I will sign for one or two years," he told Danish news agency Ritzau.
Petersen, who won the Tour of Luxembourg as well as the Tour of Saxony this summer, has had offers from several foreign teams. German Team Coast, with compatriots Frank Høj and Lars Michaelsen on the team and Jørgen Markussen in the management had shown interest.
"I have a good position on the team, so why not continue?" said Petersen who has ridden this year with a personal sponsor to pay his salary, since he came to Fakta after their budget was spent. The team agreed to pay all his supporting costs (material, travel etc.) and he will certainly be on a full contract next season.
Fakta are also trying to keep hold of Australian Scott Sunderland, who has benefited from a very solid early season to move up to 68th on the UCI rankings. Like it or not, UCI points are the gold standard for bargaining for riders, as teams want points to ensure their status in the top division. Next year with the restructuring of the team divisions to have a first tier of 10 teams (who can ride in any race), and a second tier with 20 (who get the next best picks), a lot of division II teams are trying to beef up their squads to make the cut.
Sunderland has had interest from several division I and II teams which could guarantee starts in the major races. However, he is also very happy with the organisation and atmosphere at Fakta, which has helped his racing this season (see the Cyclingnews interview with Scott for more details).
Fakta, currently in 11th place in the division II rankings, needs to sign other riders with enough points in order to secure a top 30 place. To do this, the team's budget will need to be expanded, and there are reportedly negotiations in place with other co-sponsors.
Tiscali want to pay less than CSC for sponsoring the CSC-Tiscali team next year since the company's names is only second in the team name. Negotiations has been going on since June and are not yet finalized, writes Danish website cyclingworld.dk.
CSC-Tiscali team management will meet the Danish Cycling Union and Team Danmark, a sponsoring organization for Danish sport in general, after the Tour of Denmark to start a U23 team. The idea is to engage six to eight promising young riders that will ride in the colours of CSC-Tiscali and prepare them for the professional team. Also foreign rider might be signed for this youth squad.
The community of Bekkevoort paid homage to Russian 'locals' Serguei Ivanov (Fassa Bortolo) and Guennadi Mikhailov (Lotto-Adecco) after their efforts in the recent Tour de France. Both riders took a flight in a hot-air balloon after the reception in the town hall on Thursday evening.
Ivanov and Mikhailov have lived for the last few years in Molenbeek-Wersbeek, a village that is part of the Oost-Brabantse community of Bekkevoort. Ivanov won the 9th stage of the Tour, but crashed out in stage 12. Mikhailov finished the race in 59th place.
Luigi Bocciolini, the public prosecutor in Florence, has placed 52 people under formal investigation for violation of the Italian anti-doping law. This is as a result of the narcotics police (NAS) raid in San Remo during the Giro d'Italia on June 6.
Searches carried out in the rooms of each team competing in the race revealed a large quantity of restricted and prohibited medical products, according to Italian police. Initially, 86 people were put under investigation, but following the completion of the analyses of 160 products, this number has been reduced to 52.
The results of the analyses revealed that approximately 10 percent of the products (which were in opened but unlabeled bottles) contained prohibited substances such as insulin and growth hormone. However, no traces of EPO were found.
Here is the list of riders that will face further investigation: Dario Andriotto (Alexia), Simone Borgheresi (Mercatone Uno), Davide Bramati (Mapei), Ermanno Brignoli (Mercatone Uno), Andrea Brugnara (Alexia), Marzio Bruseghin (iBanesto.com), Matteo Carrara (Colpack), Daniel Clavero (Mercatone Uno), Massimo Codol (Lampre), Daniele De Paoli (Mercatone Uno), Giuseppe Di Grande (Caldirola), Vladimir Duma (Panaria), Alberto Elli (Telekom), Giuliano Figueras (Panaria), Paolo Lanfranchi (Mapei), Marco Magnani (Alexia), Mario Manzoni (Alexia), Renzo Mazzoleni (Colpack), Gabriele Missaglia (Lampre), Giampaolo Mondini (Mercatone Uno), Massimiliano Mori (Saeco), Rinaldo Nocentini (Mapei), Pavel Padrnos (Saeco), Perez Cuapio (Panaria), Andrea Peron (Fassa Bortolo), Mariano Piccoli (Lampre), Ivan Quaranta (Alexia), Domenico Romano (Panaria), Fabio Sacchi (Saeco), Paolo Savoldelli (Saeco), Maxmilian Sciandri (Lampre), Edy Serri (Alexia), Roberto Sgambelluri (Telekom), Marcello Siboni (Mercatone Uno), Alessandro Spezialetti (Cantina Tollo), Gian Luca Valoti (Alexia), Antonio Varriale (Panaria), Marco Velo (Mercatone Uno), Marco Villa (Alexia), and Dario Frigo (ex-Fassa Bortolo).
Next Thursday, Luigi Bocciolini will meet those responsible in the NAS to sort out when the hearings will take place, in order to determine the exact source of the seized doping products.
The Bo Hamburger case does not affect the validity of the EPO test is the official point of view of the Danish Sports Federation doping committee in a statement issued Wednesday. The reason for Hamburger's acquittal was the fact that there were two different results of the B sample analysis of which one was under the allowed level of 80 percent. The UCI's EPO test can be used, despite the fact that it isn't yet approved by the International Olympic Committee.
31 year old ex-pro Martin Kryger, riding for and training Team Cycling Ringsted, who tested positive for Nandrolone in June, will be suspended for two years since his B sample also showed traces of Nandrolone, according to Danmarks Radio. Kryger blames a food supplement.
After it was revealed that his B sample was positive he was immediately lifted out from Team Cycling Ringsted by the team management.

Meirhaeghe's main challenger will be Frenchman Miguel Martinez, current leader in the World Cup.
