German champion Jan Ullrich has not ruled out his participation in the World Championships in Lisbon in October, but he will refrain from making the decision until the end of September. "If at the end of September I am not too K.O., I will start in Portugal," he said in an interview with Bild.
When asked whether he would ever be able to beat Lance Armstrong, he replied: "I am convinced I can."
On his own riding style: "I ride faster sitting than standing. That is an assessment. My pulse is higher by about seven beats if I get out of the saddle. It rises from 180 to 187. That is a whole level."
On August 19, the HEW Cyclassics in Hamburg will see an excellent quality field for round 7 of the World Cup. Big favourite will be six time TdF green jersey winner Erik Zabel (Telekom), who finished fourth last year after a late breakaway by Gabriele Missaglia and Francesco Casagrande stole the show. Zabel's support will include Jan Ullrich, along with a solid Telekom line up.
Zabel's main rival in the Tour, Stuart O'Grady (Credit Agricole) will be present, along with Tour stage winner, Jens Voigt who is being sought after by other teams.
"I do not wish to express myself publicly about my future," said Voigt in Hamburg today, who admitted that he was well suited for the 250 kilometre race.
World Cup leader Eric Dekker (Rabobank) will of course be there, as the overall World Cup is his principal goal this year. The US Postal squad will also be present, but the names have yet to be communicated to the organisers.
Richard Virenque has obtained a special dispensation from the UCI to start racing one day earlier, meaning that he will ride in the Tour of Denmark for Domo-Farm Frites from August 14-18. Virenque was due to start in a criterium in Quillan on August 15, as his suspension would have ended at midnight on August 14.
The organisers of the Quillan race were informed last Friday by Virenque's wife, and have signed Andrei Kivilev (Cofidis) and Stuart O' Grady (Credit Agricole) to take Virenque's place.
Dutch sprinter Jeroen Blijlevens has not yet managed to secure a contract for next season with his current team Lotto-Adecco. After two seasons without results, Blijlevens needs to be prepared to ride for a lower salary, despite winning 73 races in his professional career. 71 of those came between 1994 and 1999 while he was with TVM. Since then, the pickings have been lean.
He is the first to admit it: "The contract is first and foremost based on a premium system. If I start winning again, then it becomes enjoyable."
Blijlevens abandoned the Tour in Aix-les-Bains, and hasn't raced since. "After the Tour of Denmark and the Tour of the Netherlands we will talk," he said of his future with Lotto. "I have a good feeling that it will be OK. If not, I think I will be able to find another place."
Commencing on Wednesday, August 8 is the 17th edition of the Regio Tour International, held for the most part in Germany. The five day 2.3 class stage race will see 20 teams in attendance, including six from division I.
Andrea Tafi (Mapei) will make his return to racing after an operation on his left leg more than three months ago, and there will be other faces reappearing such as Danilo Hondo (Telekom) and Pietro Caucchioli (Alessio). Filippo Simeoni (Cantina Tollo), Laurent Brochard (Jean Delatour) and Thomas Liese (Nürnberger) are others to look out for in this race.
Cantina Tollo, Regio-Mix Team, Jean Delatour, German National Team, CSC-Tiscali, Team Coast, Team Cologne, Saeco, Gerolsteiner, Team Telekom, Team Nürnberger, Bonjour, Mapei-Quick Step, Post Swiss Team, Ag2R Prevoyance, Alexia Alluminio, Tacconi Sport-Vini Caldirola, Colpack, Alessio, Phonak
Known as the Red Zinger last year, the 225 km Saturn Cycling Classic from Boulder to Breckenridge is billed as "unique [in the USA] for its terrain, altitude and climate." The race involves some 3,500 metres of climbing over seven mountain passes (both paved and unpaved), finishing in the ski resort of Breckenridge, Colorado.
The field this year includes several top road cyclists as well as mountain bikers:
