Cyclingnews 2005 Reader Poll ResultsBest One-day RaceNo other race has the gritty romance of your choice for the year's best one-day Classic, Paris-Roubaix. Even in a year when the weather is reasonably kind - as it was in 2005 - this is a race where finishing is a challenge. Less than half the field made it to Roubaix this year, and only 80 of the 192 starters were inside the time limit. Meanwhile at the head of the pack, this year's race confirmed that Tom Boonen really is the next god of Belgian cycling as he completed the rare Flanders-Roubaix double by beating George Hincapie and Juan Antonio Flecha in a three-up sprint on the Roubaix velodrome. In second place, the last and longest of the Spring Classics, Liège-Bastogne-Liège. Alexandre Vinokourov was a popular winner, the tough man from Kazakhstan proving that was as dangerous in the one-day format as he is in stage races, and bringing some much-needed success to T-Mobile from a rider not named Ullrich or Zabel. In third place, the first of Boonen's historic duo, the Ronde van Vlaanderen. Rather than rely on his blistering sprint, Boonen took Flanders with an audacious solo move 8km from the line, and demonstrated that he could win with heart and mind and not just legs and lungs.
