After five previous podium appearances, but none on the top step, Belgian mountain biker Filip Meirhaeghe finally won a rainbow jersey this year. The Belgian has had one of the longest careers in mountain bike racing - one editor here remembers him hopping around on his front wheel on the start line of the junior world championships in Spa, Belgium in 1989 (this was before the UCI world's when there were two events claiming the title, one in Europe and one in the US). You were obviously as pleased as we were to see him finally pull on the stripes.
The Canadian duo of Roland Green and Ryder Hejsedal took the runner-up places. Green remains popular despite not having quite as good a year in 2003, while Hesjedal is very much the rising young star - it will be interesting to see how he mixes road and mountain bike racing in 2004.
