World Track Championships - CMMelbourne, Australia, May 26-30, 2004Event program and results Qualifying First round Second round Quarter Finals Semi Finals Finals Women's SprintCycling's fastest women strutted their stuff in qualifying on Friday morning, with impressive high-speed rides from Svetlana Grankovskaya (Russia), Anna Meares (Australia) and Simona Krupeckaite (Lithuania) among others. Later in the day, things got serious with the first round, which saw both Meares and Grankovskaya go through to the next stage. The women continued on Friday by completing their quarter-finals which then set up the action for Saturday's full house. Saturday's sessions saw the sprint action come thick and fast with battles between riders from the old and new worlds. The semi-finals saw Great Britain's Victoria Pendleton take on Svetlana Grankovskaya (Russia), while local heroine Anna Meares went up against Canada's Lori-Ann Muenzer. In the medal finals, the ride-off for the bronze was decided in two heats while the gold medal went down to three races and the sprinters gave it all.
