The morning session of racing on the second day of the world track championships saw history made as Leontien Zijlaard Van Moorsel's almost four-year-old record was broken in the qualifiers of the women's 3000m IP . In a thrilling showdown between record-holder Van Moorsel and her rival, the record looked threatened but not certain until the very last moment when a storming final lap shaved off two-tenths of a second.

Friday morning's first round set the stage for a thrilling final as Sarah Ulmer (New Zealand) and Katie Mactier (Australia) won their heats against Emma Davies (Great Britain) and Karin Thurig (Switzerland). The bronze has definitely gone to Russia, with Elena Tchalykh defeating Leotien van Moorsel (Netherlands) to go through and Olga Slyusareva knocking out Katherine Bates (Australia).

The final was a full-on trans-Tasman battle, with Sarah Ulmer (NZ) facing Katie Mactier (Aust) while the ride-off for bronze saw the two Russian riders - Elena Tchalykh and Olga Slyusareva - go head-to-head.
