Seventeen teams lined up for qualifying in the three-lap dash, with the contenders expected to come from the strong Australian, German, French and Great British teams. The pressure was on all teams to do well, as a top ten finish would earn Olympic starts in three events: the sprint, keirin and team sprint.

The finals came down to three of the expected teams, plus a surprise appearance by Spain, but the gold went toa country that has always been powerful in this event
