The 198 riders starting in the 2008 Giro d'Italia arrived in Palermo's airport on Wednesday evening. Defending Champion, Italian Danilo Di Luca (LPR Brakes), showed up in a maglia rosa of sorts (it was a pink casual shirt).

After unpacking and a night's rest, teams – including 2007 Tour de France Alberto Contador's Astana – hit the roads around Palermo for training in view of the race start on Saturday. The 2008 Giro d'Italia – 21 stages total – kicks off with a 23.6-kilometre team time trial.
