World and Olympic
champion Julien Absalon topped the poll for best male mountain bike racer of
2004, ahead of NORBA champion Geoff
Kabush. Top Belgian rider Roel Paulissen was third.
It was tumultuous year for men's mountain biking with king of fat tyres Filip
Meirhaeghe retiring in disgrace after testing positive for EPO, leaving the
field wide open at worlds and in Athens. Absalon picked his moment and stepped
smartly into the limelight.
