Cyclingnews 2007 Reader Poll ResultsBest female track riderSarah drops the HammerBy Laura Weislo What's in a name? Our best female trackie has a name that strikes fear into the hearts of her competitors. When American Sarah Hammer came back from a premature retirement, she struck a blow to the hopes of the rest of the women pursuiters and took two consecutive World Championship titles. Hammer also claimed victory in the Los Angeles World Cup no fewer than three times - in the Scratch, Points and pursuit. Hammer won our reader poll by a huge margin over triple World Champion, Victoria Pendleton. The British rider has titles in the sprint, team sprint and keirin, and deserved every one of her 1,409 votes. Australians took the next three spots in the poll, with 500m world record holder Anna Meares slotting in at third ahead of Points race World Champion Katherine Bates and double World Cup gold medallist, pursuiter Katie Mactier. Canadian Gina Grain earned her sixth place by jetting all over the world to earn UCI points - from Venezuela to Italy to Australia and China. She bested UCI #1 ranked Italian Vera Carrara, sprinter Shuang Gao, and Cuban Lisandra Guerra and Pan-Am champion, Colombian Maria Luisa Calle.
