Breaking the Women's Three Kilometer World Pursuit record mulitple times and
becoming World Champion and Olympic Champion all in one year certainly put Sarah
Ulmer's name on the lips of all cycling fans. With her perfect style, Ulmer
shook Leontein Van Moorsel's four year world record of 3.30.604 when she beat
out Australia's Katie McTier in the World Championships in Melbourne and went
on to break her own record by over six seconds two months later at the Olympic
Games in Athens, raising the level of women's track cycling in an instant. Ulmer's
down to earth attitude and bubbly smile also endeared her to sporting enthusiasts
around the world and ensured her domination of the Cyclingnews reader
poll.
Taking 100 points for second place was young Australian sprinter Anna
Meares who surprised even herself when she took out the World Championship
in Melbourne and backing up to win the Gold Medal in the 500m Time Trial in
Athens. Her competitor Lori-Ann Meunzer from Canada won Gold in the Women's
sprint in Athens takes third in the 2004 reader poll.
