While small amounts of Shimano's Dura-Ace
group were available in 2003, it's part of the company's 2004 equipment
line-up, so we're going to slightly bend the rules and allow it to be eligible
for our 'best new product' award. Given that it was far and away the most popular
choice in this category it's not like we really have a choice! We've grouped
together all votes for Dura-Ace, but quite a few went to the chainset, and it's
the simplicity of the two-piece design that Shimano brought to the road for
2004 that seems to appeal.
Of course, what many of us would like is Dura-Ace features without the price
tag, and in the last few weeks Shimano has started to ship the 2005 version
of the Ultegra group, with most of Dura-Ace's features but in slightly heavier
materials. Ultegra took third spot behind fizik's Arione saddle, another late
2003 introduction which continues to be popular for its comfort.
