95th Tour de France - GTFrance, July 5-27, 2008Main Page Overall standings Previous Stage Next Stage Restday 2 - Monday, July 21: CuneoEvery second countsIn the most suspenseful Tour de France for years, there are still six riders within a minute heading into the race's final week. The top three are separated by a mere eight seconds. Before the final showdown in the Alps, the riders spend their second rest day in neighbouring Italy. Cyclingnews' Bjorn Haake and Shane Stokes reflect on the week that was and look ahead at what is still to come. Cadel Evans (Silence-Lotto) lost his one-second lead to Fränk Schleck (CSC-Saxo Bank) in the first Alpine stage. But Evans is hardly out of contention, sitting just eight seconds back. Nonetheless the Australian has dropped to third as Bernhard Kohl (Gerolsteiner) moved up into second place. Kohl is only seven seconds adrift from the older of CSC-Saxo Bank's Schleck brothers. It can't get much more suspenseful than this. Three more riders are still within reach of the yellow jersey, with fourth placed Denis Menchov (Rabobank) still sitting pretty at 38 seconds back. Menchov rode into Italy strongly, despite a crash on the lower slopes of the Prato Nevoso. American Christian Vande Velde (Garmin Chipotle - H30) is another general classification hopeful, sitting just one second further back in fifth place. Even Carlos Sastre (CSC-Saxo Bank) in sixth can still dream of yellow, being only 46 seconds back. By all accounts the little Spanish climber gets better in the third week. What makes the scenario especially interesting is the fact that the sextet is divided right down the middle. Schleck, Kohl and Sastre are from the mountaineering department. Evans, Menchov and Vande Velde are really strong against the clock. But none of them are slackers in their weaker discipline, either. A big doping scandal prevented last week from becoming as quiet for the general classification contenders as they had hoped for. Riccardo Riccò (Saunier Duval-Scott) returned a non-negative A sample from the time trial in Cholet, which led to the Italian being thrown out of the race before Stage 12 started. In fact his entire team left the race, with fellow stage winner Leonardo Piepoli reportedly revealing to team management later that it was he who supplied Riccò with the third generation EPO substance. Both riders have since been sacked from the team. The transitional stages saw the sprinters make the most of their few opportunities. Mark Cavendish (Team Columbia) struck twice to bring his total tally of Tour stage wins to four – all achieved in 2008! Rabobank's Oscar Freire finally found his sprinting legs, using probably the last opportunity for the fast men before the Champs-Élysées to score a stage win. The Spaniard in the maillot vert is on track to win his first points competition. The only time the sprinters couldn't score before the second set of mountains started was in Stage 11, when Norwegian Champion Kurt-Asle Arvesen (CSC-Saxo Bank) won the sprint of the breakaway. After Riccò's demise, the young rider competition and the battle for the mountains jersey became interesting again. Youngster Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas) took over the lead of the maillot blanc for the best rider under 25 years of age. Roman Kreuziger (Liquigas) has kept up with the best in the mountains and may actually pass his team-mate before Paris. Andy Schleck is less than four minutes back, but his chances are a bit compromised. First and foremost he will have to work for his brother Fränk as well as Sastre in the quest for yellow. On the first big day in the Alps Gerolsteiner's Kohl took over the mountains jersey from his team-mate Sebastian Lang. In the transitional stages Lang was allowed to take most points ahead of Kohl and keep the jersey for a few more days. Kohl will be hoping this tactic doesn't backfire in the end, as Fränk Schleck is very likely to add some points to his tally. But as long as Kohl is still up in the battle for yellow, he is unlikely to lose much of his 35-point advantage over the first non-Gerolsteiner rider. With the dominant performance it has shown in the mountains, the CSC-Saxo Bank team is likely to continue to lead the teams classification for a few days, if not all the way to Paris. Whether it can also lead the overall classification all the way back across the border and to the French capital remains to be seen. Stage 11 - Wednesday, July 16: Lannemezan - Foix, 167.5kmKurt-Asle Arvesen of the CSC-Saxo Bank took the first Tour de France stage win in his 11-year career. It was also the the first win for the Danish team in this year's Grande Boucle. Arvesen succeeded in a sprint of a small breakaway group, beating Martin Elmiger (AG2R La Mondiale) and Alessandro Ballan (Lampre). Arvesen started his sprint too early, but managed to hold off the other two in a photo finish. In June he became the national champion of Norway. "This is the biggest win in my career. I won the Under-23 World Championship and two stages at the Giro, but it can't get better than winning a stage at the Tour in the national jersey." The man of the day was Frenchman Amaël Moinard of the Cofidis team. He spent some 60 kilometres ahead of the 13-man move that dominated the day. But in the end, he was caught just three kilometres from the line. "We were already up there in the first days of the Tour, with Stéphane [Augé] and Sylvain [Chavanel]. I have super team-mates at Cofidis." Cadel Evans raced in yellow for the first time. Coming back after the rest day break he was happy to see a break go. It was easier to get back into the race rhythm. Evans spent an uneventful day on the road, only made miserable by one thing. His crash in stage 10 made it hard for him to even put his yellow jersey on in the morning. Oscar Freire let Thor Hushovd and Erik Zabel slip by in the bunch sprint for 13th, but kept his lead in the points classification. Saunier Duval-Scott kept the lead in the KOM jersey competition with Riccardo Riccò and David De La Fuente preceding the Gerolsteiner duo of Sebastian Lang and Bernhard Kohl. Riccò also led the young rider classification. CSC-Saxo Bank took over the lead in the teams classification. Stage 12 - Thursday, July 17: Lavelanet - Narbonne, 168.5kmMark Cavendish underlined his status as the fastest sprinter in this year's Tour de France when he rocketed to his third stage victory of the race, beating Sébastien Chavanel (Française des Jeux), Gert Steegmans (Quick Step), Erik Zabel (Team Milram) and Oscar Freire (Rabobank) to the line in Narbonne. "It was a perfect sprint," the Team Columbia rider said after the finish. "I am the first [rider] who has won three times in this Tour. The team has done great work," he said. The victory was particularly satisfying for the 23 year old as he had fallen on the tenth stage, hurting his arm and leg. "I crashed a day before the rest day. There was a football rolling across the street, and I went down with 50 km/h." There was no change to the overall standings, with yellow jersey Cadel Evans (Silence Lotto) finishing alongside his rivals in the main bunch and thus preserving his one second lead over Fränk Schleck (CSC – Saxo Bank). He said after the stage that it took effort on his and his team's part to stay to the front and thus out of trouble. "It is hard to stay in the top twenty. My team worked a lot, so they were tired in the end." Undoubtedly the biggest news of the day was Riccardo Riccò's positive test for an EPO product named CERA. He was disqualified from the race and arrested by French police, while his Saunier Duval – Scott team-mates all withdrew. Riccò had been ninth overall before the stage, and was also leading the King of the Mountains and best young rider classifications. Team-mate Juan Jose Cobo Acebo had been eighth overall. With Riccò and David De La Fuente gone, Sebastian Lang (Gerolsteiner) took over the polka-dot jersey, while Vincenzo Nibali (Liquigas) inherited the maillot blanc as best young rider. The 168.5 kilometre stage was marked by a long attack by Arnaud Gérard (Francaise des Jeux) and Samuël Dumoulin. They went clear 36 kilometres after the start, opened up a lead of nearly four minutes, and were later caught by Juan Jose Oroz (Euskaltel Eukadi). Despite their combined efforts to stay clear, the peloton reeled them in with nine kilometres remaining, setting things up for the big bunch gallop and Cavendish's third win. Stage 13 - Friday, July 18: Narbonne - Nîmes, 182kmOne day after landing his third victory in this year's Tour, Mark Cavendish further emphasised his domination in the sprints when he won into Nîmes. The Columbia rider beat Robbie McEwen (Silence Lotto), Romain Feillu (Agritubel), Heinrich Haussler (Gerolsteiner) and Oscar Freire (Rabobank) in the mass bunch gallop. It was the second successive stage win for the Isle of Man competitor, and doubled the previous British record of two stage wins in a single Tour, as set by Barry Hoban in 1969 and again in 1973. "I heard over the radio that there was a lot of wind [near the finish]," said Cavendish. "I wasn't well placed with 700 metres to go and had a hard time accelerating." Runner-up McEwen graciously praised his younger competitor. "I went on the right and he went on the left, but he was just too strong," said McEwen. "I tried to stay on his wheel, but he was just four or five kilometres faster - it was not possible today." Race leader Cadel Evans once again held onto yellow, finishing in the main bunch after a day of good work by his Silence-Lotto squad. The Australian continued to hold a slender one-second lead over Fränk Schleck, but confessed to being a little nervous about the coming mountains. "CSC has the numbers. Schleck is very close. Sastre gets better in the third week. We will see." The stage saw a long-distance breakaway by Niki Terpstra (Milram) and Florent Brard (Cofidis). They had established their maximum gap of 9'55 after some 21 kilometres of racing, and remained out front for most of the day. Terpstra attacked just before the final intermediate sprint and while Brard was joined by team-mate Stéphane Augé after the prime line, the duo could not get back up to the Milram rider. However the peloton had mopped everything up just before the ten kilometre to go sign, and recaptured subsequent moves by Stef Clement (Bouygues Telecom) and then Sylvain Chavanel (Cofidis). A bunch sprint ensued, and Cavendish once again showed his superiority. Stage 14 - Saturday, July 19: Nîmes - Digne les Bains, 194.5kmTriple world champion Oscar Freire strengthened his grip on the green jersey when he beat Leonardo Duque (Cofidis), Erik Zabel (Milram) and the rest of the main field into Digne les Bains. The Spaniard grabbed his fourth career Tour stage win in the process. "In the end I was afraid of getting boxed in," he stated. "But I was behind Zabel; I took the right wheel today and I went at the correct moment. It got pretty tight in the end, though, and I almost collided with him." Freire first won a Tour stage in 2002 and took a double victory in the race four years later. However he's only once finished in Paris and hasn't – until now – shown the consistency needed to win the green jersey competition. He was hoping that had changed, and also that his team had a chance for the overall victory in Paris. "I hope to keep green," Freire stated after the stage. "And in the mountains we have a leader like Menchov. We hope he can take yellow... For me, Menchov is the best candidate [to win] this Tour." Race leader Cadel Evans yet again defended his jersey, finishing in the main bunch and remaining one second clear of Frank Scleck (CSC – Saxo Bank). The 194.5-kilometre stage saw yet another small breakaway group try to hold off the sprinters' teams. Sandy Casar (Française des Jeux), William Bonnet (Crédit Agricole), Bram Tankink (Rabobank) and Iván Gutiérrez (Caisse d'Epargne) went away with seventeen others after some ten minutes of racing, then forged ahead from this group approximately 45 kilometres after the start. They built a maximum lead of almost six minutes, but the last of them – former Spanish time trial champion Gutiérrez – was reeled in with just over ten kilometres left. A flurry of attacks followed on the final climb, putting multiple stage winner Mark Cavendish (Columbia) and others out the back. Sylvain Chavanel then attacked on the descent down to the finish but even this late, cheeky move was not enough to prevent a bunch sprint and Freire's fourth-ever stage win in the Tour. Stage 15 - Sunday, July 20: Embrun - Prato Nevoso, 183kmOn a day of mixed fortunes for Australian riders, Simon Gerrans (Crédit Agricole) grabbed his first-ever Tour de France stage at the Italian summit finish of Prata Nevoso. The Crédit Agricole rider outsprinted breakaway companions Egoi Martinez (Euskaltel-Euskadi) and Danny Pate (Garmin-Chipotle) to the line, with Jose Luis Arrieta (AG2R La Mondiale) finishing 55 seconds back. Gerrain's compatriot Cadel Evans (Silence Lotto) was left without team-mates on the final climb and came under a flurry of attacks from his main rivals. Fränk Schleck and his CSC -Saxo Bank team-mates Andy Schleck and Carlos Sastre put considerable pressure on the maillot jaune, while a big attack by Denis Menchov (Rabobank) could have been dangerous had the Russian not slid on a corner and crashed, temporarily losing time to the Evans group. Bernhard Kohl (Gerolsteiner), Sastre, Alejandro Valverde (Caisse d'Epargne) and Denis Menchov (Rabobank) finally managed to jettison the maillot jaune close to the line, while Fränk Schleck made a later move and gained a crucial nine seconds. This saw the Luxembourg national road race champion seize the yellow jersey, ending the day seven seconds ahead of new KOM jersey-wearer Kohl and a further second up on the previous GC leader. American rider Christian Vande Velde (Garmin Chipotle) gained a little time on Evans but dropped to fifth overall, while Sastre moved to sixth. He ended the day just 49" off the race lead, showing how close the battle was for the jersey. Gerrans had joined up with the other three breakaway riders approximately 15 kilometres into the stage. They pulled out a lead of approximately 17 minutes, the gap growing in part due to a bad crash by Oscar Pereiro (Caisse d'Epargne) and then a subsequent fall by many riders one hour later. The advantage meant that they could fully concentrate on their battle for the stage win while, behind, the general classification contenders fought it out for the right to wear the yellow jersey heading into the second rest day. The continuous stream of attacks meant that there was a change at the top. However, with the top six so close overall, there was clearly still a lot of racing left in the Tour.
