Once again, Team CSC's Cervélo team bikes have taken top honors in the
Cyclingnews Reader Poll with nearly a quarter of the votes, relegating even
well established framebuilders Colnago
and Pinarello to second and third place.
Cervélo and Team CSC have certainly come a long way since first inking
their sponsorship agreement back in 2003. Bjarne Riis' team has benefited from
being outfitted with some of the world's most admired framesets, starting with
the then-revolutionary aluminum Soloist. While no one will claim that the team's
bikes were solely responsible for Team CSC's extensive palmares over the years,
they certainly didn't hurt.
In return, Cervélo heads Gerard Vroomen and Phil White have had access
to some of the most competent and rigorous test riders in the world in developing
their latest carbon creations. In only three short years, the landscape of the
team's equipment has changed dramatically, swapping from those early aluminum
creations to the lightweight carbon fiber R2.5 and now to the Cervélo's
impressive Soloist
Carbon, R3, and P3 designs.
In spite of their successes, Vroomen and White are clearly not content to sit
on their laurels as the already successful Soloist Carbon and R3 frames have
now spawned a pair of significantly lighter weight variants, the SLC-SL and
the R3-SL. We'll see how these do in next year's poll, but for now, to the victor
goes the spoils.
