Eadie takes sprint gold; Thomas - Lindenmuth in all USA women's final

Newly crowned Australian sprint champion Sean Eadie added a round of the 2002 UCI Track World Cup to his sprinter's bow with a stunning two-nil gold medal winning ride against world sprint champion Arnaud Tournant at Sydney's Dunc Gray velodrome this afternoon.

Eadie, 33, from Adelaide, showed he is in the best form of his career, pushing his esteemed 24 year old French rival to his limit in a display of faultless tactics and incredible leg speed.

Beating Tournant - winner of the kilo and the team sprint at the first World Cup round in Mexico and reigning world sprint, kilo and world sprint champion - has long been a goal of Eadie's. However coach, Martin Barras, was keeping his charge well-grounded.

"I was saying to Marv (Barras' nickname), yeah I think I might ride a 96 (gear) against Tournant, but he was saying, yeah, we gotta get to Tournant yet," Eadie said after the medal presentation.

"But it was like a little carrot dangling there . . . and it went to plan. Marv and I spoke about two races . . ..because there are two - me leading out or him leading out - but we knew it would be tough because he is the world champion and he has his pride.

"Like, you could see that last night when Ryan (Australian Ryan Bayley) upset him. He hurt himself that much he was over throwing up afterwards. He didn't have it good essentially in the keirin or the teams sprint, so it was a long way to fly for no result."

Eadie rode the first sprint quite high on the track, made his move just before the bell then attempted to come around Arnaud on the outside. The Frenchman was powering low but Eadie was very, very determined and ultimately, the stronger of the two.

"I was riding high because he took me up high," he said by way of explanation. "My distance is not as good as my acceleration. I saw him riding slow at the bottom and I wanted to have him going hard with one and a half laps to go. I wanted to make him use up all his gas and even if I didn't beat him, at least it would hurt him for the second round.

"But I had to do it without using up too much of my own gas." He said he had to thank his old sparring partner at Sydney's older outdoor track, Tempe - New Zealander Anthony Peden - for helping him get through the second round.

"Weapon (Peden) has a similar style to Arnaud, trying to push me out the doorway," he said. "That's what Arnaud was doing in the second round, but I was waiting".

Thomas wins women's sprint in all-USA final

THE Australian round of the 2002 UCI Track World Cup women's sprint came down to a dog-eat-dog tussle between two feisty Americans, with the gold medal going to the rider who took silver in the 2001 world sprint championship - Tammy Thomas.

Thomas beat team mate Tanya Lindenmuth two rounds to nil in 12.210 and 12.376. Canadian Lori-Ann Muenzer beat Australian Michelle Ferris for the bronze two rounds to one in 12.510 and 12.668. Ferris took the first round in 12.060 but Muenzer proved stronger in the final two.

Both finals were hotly contested - which is not surprising given the calibre of the riders.

Thomas took silver in the sprint, the 500m time trial at the first World Cup round in Mexico, was second in the 500m time trial at the USA national titles and fourth in the sprint.

Lindenmuth represented the USA in the Sydney Olympics and at world titles in 1999, 2000 and 2001. She was US track champion from 1999-2001 in the sprint and 500m time trial and has been a member of the US national team since 1998. She finished fourth in Mexico.

Muenzer took the bronze in the 500m time trial and bronze in the sprint at last year's world track cycling championships, is Canadian national sprint and 500 metre time trial champion. She was a team member at the Sydney 2000 Olympics.

Ferris, meanwhile, remains one of Australia's most distinguished track cyclists. She took silver in the 500 metre time trial at the Sydney Olympics, national sprint champion in 2000, national 500m time trial champion and Australian female track cyclist of the year in 1999 - the same year she took silver in the sprint at the world championships in Germany.

But today's event belonged to the Americans and national track coach Des Dickie was very happy with them.

"We only brought a small team of five riders - four women and one man - but we have done very well," he said. "It is a young team - all the senior riders left after the Olympics, so at this stage we just want to be competitive. I think the women's program is very strong, while the men's is still developing."

The male sprinters stayed at home to prepare for a selection meeting next weekend in Texas. "I think the United States is one of the top five cycling nations," Dickie said.
