EICMA 2003 Milan, Italy, September 16-21, 2003

Our coverage of the Milan EICMA show continues with a look at some of the show's more attention-grabbing bikes and a lighter refinement of an an old favourite saddle. Black by name Photo: © Cyclingnews Carrera Nero Supplier to Mercatone Uno and Vini Caldirola, Carrera has plenty of experience building pro bikes. Here is the company's carbon fibre monocoque Nero, equipped with FSA's new Superlight carbon fibre crankset, ITM's Unika carbon fibre bars and stem and FIR wheels. Seen here in the Mercatone Uno team colours, the Hercules is the rig used by that team's Marco Pantani and Vini Caldirola's Stefano Garzelli. An aluminium front triangle with a 1.125-inch integrated headtube mated to a full carbon rear triangle makes for a nice bike indeed.

Ego trip Photo: © Cyclingnews Pinarello For the 2003 Milan EICMA bike show, Pinarello has created this showstopper version of the magnesium Dogma. With its shiny silver finish, Pinarello calls this special show bike the Dogma Ego.

Red, white & blue Photo: © Cyclingnews Paolo's Page US cyclocross champ Jonathan Page will be sponsored for the 2003-2004 cyclocross season by the legendary Milanese bike builder Paolo Guerciotti, who has created a special stars and stripes version to go along with Page's Captain America strip.

Lite Flite Photo: © Cyclingnews Selle Italia Steven Merlini of Italian saddle maker Selle Italia explained to Cyclingnews, "For our 2004 line, we wanted to update some of our models with carbon." The 2004 version of Selle Italia's popular Flite model has a carbon insert that has brought the weight down to 155 grams, while the SLR, now in a Carbonio version with carbon and Vanox rails weighs in at only 125 grams, and a SLR Carbonio Gel version is 200 grams with gel inserts.   Selle Italia also has a new SLC model, with carbon and Vanox rails and "a new anatomically-shaped channel in the middle that offers more comfort," according to Merlini.

Cannibal goes carbon Photo: © Cyclingnews Merckx A legend in his own time: Universally acknowledged as the greatest pro road rider of all time, Eddy "the Cannibal" Merckx is also a fine bike builder. Here "il grande Merckx" poses with his new, top of the line, all Campy MXM carbon fibre bike. Eddy's son Axel rides a Merckx Team SC as a member of the Merckx-sponsored Lotto-Domo squad, the team that won this year's Ronde van Vlaanderen (Tour of Flanders) and Paris-Roubaix aboard Eddy's rigs.
