Day 5 - September 22

Another Aussie gold-rush

Day five of the Athens Paralympics saw the close of the track-cycling, with Australia continuing it's cycling dominance in the Greek capital. The Aussie paralympic cycling team won 8 of the 16 gold medals on offer, and has taken home 30% of all medals on offer in cycling thus far.

Day five saw the final of the Women's B1-3 Tandem 3km Individual Pursuit, taken out by the American team of Karissa Whitsell and Katie Compton in a time of 3.36.81 (49.811 km/h), a new world record. Silver went to the Australian pairing of Lindy Hou and Toireasa Ryan, with Australians Janet Shaw and Kelly Mccombie also taking the bronze.

In the Men's LC 1-4&CP 3/4 Bicycle Team Sprint, Australia took home the gold with the team of Peter Brooks (LC1), Greg Ball (LC4) and Peter Homann (DV4) beating the American team of Daniel Nicholson (DV3), Ron Williams (LC2) and Paul Martin (LC2) in a time of 53.968. Australian team captain Chris Scott, assisted the team to make the final but chose to step-down for the last encounter.

"Chris made a courageous decision to leave himself out of the final. It meant he didn't receive a medal, but we all know he was deserving of one and did as much as anyone to achieve gold," commented Brooks. "Our Olympic team a few weeks back warmed up the track for us and we showed this week that we could sustain the same level of success during the Paralympics."

France raced Germany in a close race for bronze, with France just pipping the Germans by 0.194 of a second.

Another race, and another gold to Australia in the Men B1-3 Tandem Kilometer Time Trial with the pair of Anthony Biddle and Kial Stewart edging out the French pair of Patrice Senmartin and Frederic Janowski by 0.36 of a second to win in a time of 1.05.14. "This is incredible; just bloody fantastic," said an excited Biddell, who competed in the High Jump in the 2000 Paralympic Games in Sydney. "After just missing out yesterday we were determined to really turn it on… we just went for it."

The cycling medal bonanza helped push Australia into fourth placing on the overall medal tally.

The cycling now takes a day's break before the racing returns to the road with the Men's Individual Road Race at the Vouliagmeni Olympic Centre
