12th Paralympic Games - JOAthens, September 18-27, 2004Main Page Results Explanation of categories Next Day Track Day 1 Round Up - September 18, 2004Britain on top as world records begin to fallBy the Cyclingnews Team World records fell in the two finals events contested on the opening day of cycling at the Paralympic Games, with Great Britain's Darren Kenny and the tandem pairing of Aileen Mcglynn and Ellen Hunter the first gold medallists at the Athens Olympic Velodrome. In the Men's CP 3/4 Bicycle Kilometre Time Trial, Kenny beat Australia's Andrew Panazzolo and the Czech Republic's Jiri Bouska in an adjusted time of 1 minute 8.196 seconds, and in doing so, established a new world record, which was broken only minutes earlier by Bouska and later by Panazzolo. In fact, Adelaide-born Panazzolo was so delighted at his achievement that the cerebral palsy athlete thrusted his arms in the air, only to come crashing down onto the track seconds later, much to the horror of spectators. But in a flash, the tall 25-year-old cyclist was up and embracing his coach and team mates as if nothing had happened. "I've only been riding for seven months... I'm still a bit average," he commented. "I told my coach before the start that if I broke the world record to standby for some emotion... I guess I took it a bit too far. "This is not even my favourite event - that's the Pursuit - so to get silver is fine by me," he added. Equally hard-fought was the Women's B 1-3 Tandem Kilometre Time Trial, with the three podium placegetters finishing within less than a second of each other. Once again, Great Britain found themselves on top of the dais, as the pairing of Aileen Mcglynn and Ellen Hunter set off for what turned out to be a world record-breaking ride, clocking a time of 1 minute 11.160 seconds to break their previous world and Paralympic record, just 61/1000ths of a second clear of Americans Karissa Whitsell and Katie Compton and the Australian duo of Lindy Hou and Janelle Lindsay, who finished with a time of 1'11.784. "Wow, we had to fight hard, but a medal is a medal," commented bronze medallist Hou after the race. Four Men's Individual Pursuit qualifiers - LC 1, LC2, LC3 and LC4 - were also run today, with Peter Brooks (Australia), Roberto Alcaide (Spain), Antonio Garcia (Spain) and Michael Teuber (Germany) all making their mark by winning each of their respective rounds. A banker from Sydney's western suburbs, Brooks came home in a personal best time of 4 minutes 52.810 seconds - a shade over one second clear of his Austrian rival, Wolfgang Eibeck, and only half a second outside the world record. "I was only trying to finish in the top two... if I had known I was so close to the world record, I would definitely have put the pedals down," said Brooks. PhotosImages by AFP
