12th Paralympic Games - JOAthens, September 18-27, 2004Main Page Results Explanation of categories Previous Day Next Day Day 3 - September 20Australians dominate third track dayThe third day of track racing at the Paralympic Games saw more of the dominant riding that the Australia's able-bodied riders displayed a few weeks earlier in the Olympics as Australia took three of the four gold medals on offer, plus a silver and bronze, moving Australia to the top of the overall medal table. Lindy Hou and Janelle Lindsay took gold in the tandem sprint, managing to retain their focus despite a serious crash involving their team-mates Lyn Lepore and Jenny Macpherson who were competing in the ride-off for bronze. Lepore and Macpherson were stretchered off the track and later taken to hospital, resulting in a forfeit to their American opponents. A decision is still to be made on whether they will be fit enough to continue their competitive schedule this week. The gold medal race was brought forward as a result and Hou and Lindsay clamped on the pace to defeat the British pairing of Aileen Mcglynn and Ellen Hunter in back-to-back rides, giving Hou her second gold medal in two days. "Like everyone we were shocked by the crash and concerned for Lyn and Jenny, but the Aussie spirit helps lift you above such circumstances," said Hou. "We stayed focused; it is what you train for, and it's what your team mates ask of each other. This is very much a team performance." In a generous gesture, the silver medalists McGlynn and Hunter donated their presentation posy to Lepore and Macpherson. Australian team captain Chris Scott was spurred on to gold in the 3km Individual Pursuit (CP) by thoughts of not letting the side down. "I just kept thinking that if I didn't win this event I would not be able to show my face in the Village… I just wanted it so much," said an emotional Scott, whose time of 3.32.958 bettered his own world and Paralympic records in the event. Nicknamed "Gecko from Gympie", Scott proudly did a victory lap of the Velodrome with an Australian flag draped super-hero style on his back and a tear in his eye. Beside him was team mate Peter Homann, of Melbourne, who finished in a time of 3.41.437 to gain silver. The "gold rush" continued when Greg Ball, of Ipswich, broke the world record in the 1km Time Trial with a blistering time of 10.07.672 - more than a second faster than Laurent Thirionet of France who picked up silver. Ball, competing in his second Paralympic Games, was jubilant. "Everything came together in that ride…all that hard training meant I was able to get the bike going exactly the way I wanted… it felt fantastic seeing that record time up on the big screen." Another record fell in the CP3 3km individual pursuit as Britain's Darren Kenny beat former Kelme professional Javier Otxoa (Spain). Kenny's time of 3.46.260 demolished the previous record of 3.57.480 set just the day before by Otxoa.
