Orbea used the Paris show to show off its new full carbon frame, the Orca. The frame weighs in at just over 1kg and uses T7000s carbon. A complete bike with Campy Record (Hyperon wheels) weighs 7.05kg.

Euskaltel-Euskadi may use this bike next year, pending further tests. Unai Etxebarria used the frame in the stage 20 uphill time trial of the Vuelta a España.

LOOK

One of Look's two new complete bike models is the KG461. The full carbon frame comes complete with Shimano 105 components, integrated headset, Mavic Cosmos wheels. The KG461 has a wishbone design for the seat stays, whereas the KG451, the other complete bike model, has a traditional lugged design, and is also sold with Shimano 105 triple chainring cranks.

The KG481SLis a replacement for the KG381i. New high-modulus carbon has shaved about 200g from the frame although the overall design remains similar to the 381i. Varying tube thicknesses are used to maintain the same stiffness throughout the size range.

The KG486 is likely to be used by Kelme and Credit Agricole in 2004. Laurent Jalabert played a role in the design of this frame, which he says is not the lightest out there but it was more important to design a high performance bike that rides well rather than the lightest. The 55cm frame weighs 1.895kg. This frame uses Look's "Progressive Sloping Evolusize" geometry, which means for smaller size frames the slope of the top tube is more pronounced, up to no slope for the 57cm. The 486 also has an integrated headset, and "double curve" wishbone seat stays designed to minimize lateral flex but provide comfort with some vertical flex.

Lapierre is proud of its newest models of carbon bikes, using what it calls LP 0.9C Technology. Its CarbonX.lite Ultimate frame is a top of the line racing frame, weighing in under 7kg. Subject to tests by the team, the frame may be used by the FDJeux.com team for 2004, which currently uses Lapierre's scandium frames.

Lapierre also continues its working relationship with downhiller Nicolas Vouilloz. Nico and his VProcess company have had a big hand in the design of the Lapierre freeride, trail and downhill bikes.

Mavic

Mavic had on display the new Wintech wireless computer and the new Ksyrium Equipe wheels, which use the same Ksyrium rims but traditional spokes. The Equipe provides a more cost-effective entry into the high performance line of Ksyrium wheels.

The Wintech computer is a wireless system (with available cadence sensor) that uses a sensor integrated in the quick release lever.

Casati

For 2004 Casati introduces the Arte, a beautiful limited edition frame. Only 200 will be produced. The Arte, along with many of Casati's carbon frames, uses carbon tubing with Casati's proprietary mold for specific amounts of lateral and vertical stiffness, and this bike features steel lugs.
